Modern magic book 1: The Lost Boy

Chapter 1

By Nathaniel RudinoPublished 5 years ago 7 min read

Brriinnnggg, brinngg....briinngg, brrinnggg. My 7:00 am alarm was blaring for me to get up and get ready for school. The atmosphere in the orphanage felt different today. It felt as if there was electricity in the air.

I got dressed and went downstairs to the bus stop. I was practicing my dice trick for school on the bus. As soon as I rolled the dice for the millionth time, the bus hit its breaks super hard to a stop. The dice fell under the seat and I went to pick them up. I grabbed them, then I looked up and out of the window to see why the bus stopped. To the left, there were cars and bricks from the buildings. To the right, there was a dark-skinned man in assassin creed like blue robes walking out from behind the car. He raised his hand and the roof of the bus creaked and lifted off. The mystery man jumped almost 30 feet into the air and landed in the bus’s aisle. He walked down the aisle and stopped at me. He turned towards me and smiled. He then reached out his hand towards me. He jumped up and looked around scared. He started to dissolve into thin air. Right before he fully evaporated, he said, "Come find me, my son."

I jumped up from my bed from sleeping, covered in sweat.

I sighed in relief,"It was just a dream," under my breath.

I looked around my room. My roommates, Borg and Mike were still asleep. I then checked the time on my phone (which didn't charge overnight). I got out of bed to wake up my roommates. I went to wake Mike up first. Mike was a fairy who had only been at the orphanage for about 6 months. He was a freshman this year. I walked towards his cage and tripped on something on the floor. I fell and bumped into his cage. He woke up and flew into my face.

"I told you about that, Caleb, you just messed up my whole room."

"It was an accident, I'm sorry man"

My other roommate muttered from other his blanket with a groggy voice,

"Quiet down, Borg want sleep"

"Well too bad Borg," I said sarcastically, "It's the first day of school"

Borg was a dwarf; his mother left him here at the monsure's a long time ago before I was even here. He was a petrified baby statue when he first came to the orphanage

“Let's go, guys, we are going to miss the bus,'' I exclaimed.

Borg finally crawled out of bed and got dressed. As we hurried down the stairs, I noticed that the orphanage was extremely quiet.

“I knew we were late, but I didn't think we were this late, I would have thought some of the others would be a little late also” Mike whispered.

Then a voice screeched in a French accent, “Is that right Michael?... You three seem to always be late. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but you three have been late every day this week. We will discuss your punishment after your studies today. ”

We hurried out of the house and walked towards the bus. As we walked, I glanced over to Borg, who looked like he had just seen a ghost.

“You ok there, buddy?” I asked him.

“ Yeah, I guess so. I'm just scared of our punishment. It wasn't good last time I was punished….”

As the three of us got to the bus stop, we saw a couple of other creatures there, including the captain of the football team, another dwarf named Zack.

“You better not cost us that game this weekend, ” Zack said as he came up and pushed Borg. Borg tripped and fell back.

I then scowled at Zack and grunted, “ why don’t you pick on someone your own size”, I walked towards Zack.

“Really pipsqueak” Zack scoffed and walked towards me, “Let’s do this then”. Just as we got in front of each other the bus pulled up and stopped. Zack looked at the bus and laughed. “Watch yourself pipsqueak”, Zack and his friends got onto the bus and we followed.

The bullies sat in the back of the bus and we sat somewhere in the middle. Borg and Mike sat together and I sat in the seat across from them. I like to sit by myself so I can practice my dice tricks for bets at school. At the next stop my longtime classmates came on the bus; Jessica Lewis. In middle school, like every other guy, I had a huge crush on her. Then once we got to high school, I kind of just lost feelings for her. Jessica was half elf and half dwarf, but somehow got only her mother's looks and her father’s skills. Some call her lucky, others say she is magic.

“Caleb… Cal….Cal?”, Jessica exclaimed.

“Yea....yeah, what’s up”, I replied.

“I was asking if I could sit here….next to you,” she asked.

“Yeah, go ahead,” I told her.

I moved over so she could sit next to me. There was an awkward silence for a bit until,

“So you know...”, Jessica whimpered quietly, “ ….there is that stupid dance at the end of the month?”

I had already known that she didn't really think the dance was stupid. She was the student body president after all. Jessica planned and created the entire dance. From every banner and poster to the order that all of the songs will play in. It was Jessica’s dance and no one could argue.

“Yeah?” I replied

She was quieter this time, “ I was wondering if you would like to go with me?”

I wanted to say ‘Why me, why not Zack, it was probably just a way for her and all the other popular people could make fun of me. Why would a senior want to go to Prom with a junior?

I reluctantly said “yeah…..sure why not”, I smiled.

“Ok great. Can you drive?” she asked

“No…..” I replied

“Well I have my permit, I can see if my parents will let me borrow a car,” she offered.

“Ok awesome” I chuckled awkwardly.

We sat there in silence, awkwardly for a bit. We arrived at school.

Jessica said, “So I’ll see you on Friday.”

I stayed looking down while playing with the dice in my hand.

As Jessica got up and left, I then remembered that the guys were sitting across from me. They stared at me in shock with their jaws dropped., “What… It's nothing.” At least then I thought it was nothing.

We got off the bus and we went to our first classes. Mike and I had math while Borg had football practice. As Mike and I walked to class, we talked about what had happened on the bus.

“So…You and Jessica huh?” Mike laughed.

“I… I… guess so; She and Zack just broke up last Friday, for the third time.”

“Girls are weird man, this is why I swing for the same team. Good luck with Jessica though”

“It’s not like that”, I rolled my eyes, “at least I have a date to the dance”.

“That you didn’t want to go in the first place” Mike scoffed while he rolled his eyes, speaking of isn’t your ‘girlfriend’ in this class with us? I think she is. She sits next to the door.”

“At least I have someone who wants to talk to me. Come to think of it, I’ve never seen you ‘talk’ to anyone at all” I laughed as I walked into class with mike on my shoulder.

“NO TOUCHING!!!” Our teacher, Mr. Torrez, yelled furiously as we walked into the doorway. Mike flew to his desk and I hurried to mine trying not to look at my teacher. The bell rang and the rest of the students hurried to their seats. The classroom was set up like any other American classroom. Straight rows with graffiti on the desks.

Good morning students, turn your textbooks to page…”

The ground started to shake vigorously.

“Earthquake!!!”, one kid yelled.

“Get under your desks,” our teacher yelled.

Just like we always practiced. We all pulled our seats out and sat under our desks. One of the girls were screaming and another was crying.

The shaking finally stopped and the class peeked up and looked around. The ground started to tremble again, “Aftershock!”, yelled my teacher, “get back under your desks.” We all rushed back under our desks as our classroom continued shaking.

I held on to my desk and then I noticed that there was a crack on the floor that was growing. I looked at Jessica, she was flipping through a really old leather book. She was looking for something in the with pages”

I started to crawl towards her and I noticed that there was this pinkish-blue glitter-glow around her hands. I continued crawling and one of the ceiling lights was falling over me. Something came over me and by instinct, I rolled under the desk that was closest to me. Luckily that kid wasn't here today. I was two desks away from Jessica at this point.

The aftershock finally stopped. And Mr. Torrez said,

“Stay down, there might be another aftershock.”

Of course, I didn’t listen and I crawled over to Jessica. I smiled at her and she smiled back acutely.

I asked her, “ Are you ok?”

She replied, “ Yeah, I think so”

Another aftershock started more violently than before. I got under the desk with Jessica. That crack from before had now surrounded us.

The teacher yelled, ”Get away from there bef…” before he could finish the crack opened up and we fell down under the floor knocking us unconscious.
