Mirror

A short story.

By Bella HigginsPublished 6 years ago 4 min read

Tracing his finger down his arm gently, Edward glanced over to his wife who sat up, her back pressed against the wooden headboard that had been knocked together by the pair the previous day. Her mouth was moving lightly as her eyes scanned her newly purchased copy of Peter Pan by J.M Barrie. A smile spread on her lips, a small chuckled escaping them every so often. Edward's eyes travelled over her body taking in all of her natural beauty. Her fair hair was tied up in rags like shoelaces so that her hair would curl, her pale skin was basking in the sunlight that protruded through the small crack in the large draping curtains. Her bright blue eyes matched her nightgown that hung loosely over hr body. To say that Edward was in love would be an understatement. She was the apple to his eye- his one and only. Elsie Hallow née Windsor was his world and would be until death do they part.

Pushing back the soft woollen blanket that Elsie had knitted, Edward slid out of he bed, laying the blanket back down to preserve the heat that was enclosed beneath. His feet then padded across the cold wooden flooring sounding as if rain was pattering on the window. His destination- the mirror- gleamed as the sunlight bounced off of the metal frame, sparkling in the corner of the room.

"Teddy, what are you doing?" Elsie's soft voice rang out as her eyes hovered above her book pages, watching her husband who stood before her late grandmother's mirror.

"Come here, love," he replied, waving his hand towards himself.

Elsie's eyebrows knitted together in confusion as she placed her book on the bedside table, joining her husband by the mirror. Edward slithered his arms around Elsie's waist hugging her towards his chest, admiring the look of him and his wife in the reflection of the mirror, his face contorting into a grin that stretched from ear to ear.

It was hard to pinpoint the exact moment that Edward fell in love with his wife all over again. Perhaps it was when her fingers looped with his as they rested on her stomach? Perhaps it was when she began to mutter the lyrics to the song of their first dance? He didn't have the faintest of ideas because it was such a regular occurrence. It seemed as though every second of every day he fell in love with her all over again, and each time it gave him a wild thrill and a surge of electricity flowed throughout his veins. Edward was as mad as a hatter; he was crazy for Elsie.

Tracing his finger down his arm gently feeling the long crevices in his skin made from wrinkles, Edward glanced over to the left where she once sat with her back pressed against the wooden headboard that had been knocked together by the pair sixty years ago yesterday. Where her mouth once moved lightly whilst her eyes would scan her fraying copy of Peter Pan by J.M Barrie, chuckling to herself as her mind was wide open imagining the wonderful world of Neverland. Edward's eyes travelled over the empty space- the untouched haven. To say Edward was in love was an understatement, his wife was, and still is, the apple to his eye - his one and only. Elsie Hallow née Windsor was his world even when death made them part.

Pushing back the soft woollen blanket that Elsie had knitted which now frayed at the hem, Edward slid out of bed, laying the blanket back down to preserve the heat that was enclosed beneath. His feet then padded across the cold wooden flooring sounding as if rain was slowly pattering on the window. His destination - the mirror - gleamed as the sunlight bounced off of the rickety metal frame, sparkling in the corner of the room like it always did.

"Teddy, what are you doing?" Elsie's soft voice would ring out as her eyes would hover above her book pages, watching as Edward stood in front of her late grandmother's mirror.

"Come here, love," he would reply, waving his hand towards himself.

Elsie's eyebrows would knit together in confusion but nonetheless she would place her book on the bedside table and join her husband. Edward would snake his arms around her waist, hugging her into his chest. The couple would admire themselves in the mirror, grinning like children on Christmas day.

It was hard to pinpoint the exact moment that Edward fell in love with his wife. However, he could pinpoint the exact moment that he would fall out of love with his. That point would be never! He would never not be in love with Elsie. Not even as he stood, back hunched over, thinning grey hair, deep wrinkles on his skin and eyes filling with tears as he stared at the reflection in the mirror, seeing the fraying Peter Pan book in the corner of the mirror, it resting on the bedside table - just as she had left it...
