Metropolis Dating Australia | App Review
Where artificial intelligence meets online dating

What is Metropolis?
Metropolis is a dating app that claims to use artificial intelligence to learn who you like, and who likes you. It appears to be the first dating app to explicitly use AI to match people. If Al can be used to select TikTok videos, why not select people for dating, right!?
How Metropolis works
The setup process is fairly straightforward. You install the app and create an account linked to your email address. Then you enter basic details like your age, height, education, etc and then upload some photos.
During this process the app asks you to take a selfie to verify your photos. A bit like when you sign up for online banking and your selfie needs to match your photo ID. So I guess the great thing about this is no more catfishing!
Though the setup is quick, it does require a little more effort than apps like Tinder as you can’t leave sections blank when filling in your details. But it’s not as time-consuming as the dating apps that make you do a personality test.
After you finish setting up your account there’s a brief training phase. The app shows you pairs of fake profiles and asks which you would date. You can answer in four ways: Yes, No, Hell Yeah! or Hell No!, and these responses teach to AI about your preferences
To be honest I wasn’t interested in many of the fake profiles and kept saying No, but there were a few interesting ones. So I was interested to see what the AI would suggest for me.
Daily suggestions
Once you complete the setup and the training, the app sends you a notification each morning with three suggestions. These suggestions are people the AI thinks you will be attracted to, and should also be attracted to you. Your response to each of the suggestions will be used to further train the AI, so its suggestions will keep improving.
I was mostly happy with my suggestions - they were usually my type. Although there have been no Hell Yeahs so far!
If you both say yes, then you're matched, and can start messaging each other. While matched you don’t get any more suggestions. This way you have to focus on one person rather than having several on the go - although you can exchange contact details and continue the conversation elsewhere. It also means you can't ghost, which is another thing I liked.
Once you end the match, there is a quick exit survey with questions like - did you meet?, are you continuing the conversation elsewhere?, if you met, did they lie on their profile?. This survey is used to weed out fake profiles who lie about their height and age, and to let the AI know if its suggestion was successful!
Pricing
Metropolis uses credits. When you set up your account you are given 5 free credits, and when you match with someone it uses one. You can buy more credits if you run out and there are incentives to earn more by referring friends.
While most dating apps make more money the longer you’re single, Metropolis’ revenues are aligned with successful matches. So for them there is a strong incentive to learn what people are really looking for and give it to them quickly.
Final Thoughts
Overall I quite liked Metropolis. It is new and is built around cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Its features are unique and easy to use and it did present me with suitable matches.
