Life Hits Hard… or Are We Just Overthinking?

From Overthinking to Overcoming: My Story

By Elowen Ray Published 9 months ago 3 min read

Let’s talk heart to heart, yaar. No drama, no deep philosophy—just real talk. This is my personal story. You might relate, or maybe you’ll just smile and move on. Either way, I hope it connects.

I come from a middle-class family. You know the type—full of love, endless support, and... a little emotional trauma on the side. Yeah, it’s like a thali meal: everything’s there, from affection to anxiety, all served together. A bit too spicy sometimes, honestly.

Growing up? It was a ride. There was always some family drama playing in the background, like a never-ending TV serial. Financial stress was a regular guest, and to top it off, I added a few bad decisions of my own. The result? Trust issues. Big ones. It’s hard for me to believe people’s words now—even if they’re offering free food. And believe me, that’s saying something.

But here’s the thing—I didn’t always used to be like this. I was bold, confident, outgoing… at least in my own eyes. Now? I’m quiet, introverted, and overthinking everything from yesterday’s awkward smile to tomorrow’s imaginary problems. Total personality rebrand. And the worst part? I never signed up for it.

Change just happens. No pop-up warnings, no friendly alerts. One day, you’re full of energy, and the next, you’re wondering if lying in bed and staring at the ceiling counts as a hobby.

There were days I asked myself: “Is this growth or am I just getting used to the chaos?” Because honestly, sometimes it feels like the mess becomes your new normal. The overthinking doesn’t help either—it’s like my brain decided to start its own 24/7 emotional podcast. Episode 384: Why did I say ‘you too’ when the waiter said enjoy your meal?

But slowly, really slowly, things started changing. The drama reduced a bit (not completely, we’re still desi after all), finances got a little better, and I began feeling that rare thing—hope. A little sunshine peeked through, and this time, I didn’t hide from it.

So, here’s the question I often ask myself: does life hit hard, or are we just overthinking everything?

My answer? Life does hit hard sometimes. But it’s the situations, not life itself. And our brain? It’s just trying to solve puzzles with missing pieces. Overthinking is its favorite hobby. But with time, things shift. You don’t notice it at first, but then suddenly, you’re laughing again. Not because everything’s perfect, but because you're stronger now.

If you’re reading this and feeling stuck, just know—life isn’t always going to look like a happy Instagram reel. But it’s still worth living. Believe in yourself. Believe in God. And maybe give your brain a break from replaying that one embarrassing moment from 7th grade. We all did weird things back then, it’s okay.

That’s all from me today. I just wanted to share this little piece of my heart with you. If it made you feel seen, comforted, or even made you smile for a second, then I’m glad I wrote it. We'll meet again in my next story. Until then, take care, stay hopeful, and whatever you do—don’t trust your brain at 2 a.m. It becomes a full-time stand-up comedian with no chill. 😉

I’ve walked through hard times, feeling lost and low,

With too many thoughts I didn’t always show.

But even in quiet, I slowly grew,

Like a small flower, finding the sun too.

Pain made me stronger, tears made me wise,

And now I see hope, even in cloudy skies.

Though the past still knocks on my door,

I smile today, because I’ve become more. That’s all from me today. I just wanted to share this little piece of my heart with you.
