Today, I want to discuss an often-overlooked yet vital part of our body: the kidneys. Kidney health is crucial, and kidney failure can have severe consequences. Here are eight golden rules to prevent kidney problems.

1. Drink Sufficient Water

Water is essential for life, and staying hydrated is critical for kidney health. The amount of water you need depends on factors like age, environment, weather, activity levels, and medical conditions. Proper hydration helps your kidneys remove waste and toxins from the blood through urine. Incorporate water-rich foods like watermelons, cucumbers, and bananas into your diet. Avoid drinking excessive water, as it can strain your kidneys. Drink water when you feel thirsty, starting with a glass of warm water in the morning, and distribute your intake throughout the day.

2. Eat Less Salt

Excessive salt can raise blood pressure and damage your kidneys. Limit your salt intake to about one teaspoon per day. Avoid canned and processed foods, salty snacks, and pickles. Instead, opt for fresh foods seasoned with herbs, spices, and lemon for added flavor.

3. Ensure Sufficient Vitamin D and Calcium

Vitamin D and calcium are essential for kidney health as they help maintain the right phosphorus levels. Include foods like milk, plant-based milk (almond, soy), tofu, and green leafy vegetables like spinach in your diet. Sunlight exposure is also crucial, so spend some time outdoors daily.

### 4. **Practice Yoga Asanas**

Yoga is excellent for kidney health. Halasana, in particular, improves kidney function. To perform Halasana, lie on your back, lift both legs above your head, touch the ground behind you, and hold for some time. Other beneficial asanas include Sarvangasana, Ardha Matsyendrasana, and Shalabhasana, which improve blood circulation to the kidneys.

5. Do Pranayama

Pranayama practices are beneficial for internal organs, including the kidneys. Ujjayi Pranayama is especially detoxifying and helps purify the kidneys. Perform Ujjayi by allowing air to pass through your constricted throat, creating a friction sound.

6. Monitor Your Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a leading cause of kidney damage. Regularly check your blood pressure and maintain it within a healthy range through diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Avoid excessive salt and processed foods, and adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle.

7. Control Your Blood Sugar

Diabetes can cause kidney damage, so it's crucial to keep your blood sugar levels in the normal range. Avoid high-sugar foods and focus on whole grains, proteins, and vegetables. A brisk walk for at least 30 minutes twice a day, especially in the morning after sunrise, is beneficial.

8. Monitor Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Untreated UTIs can spread to the kidneys and cause serious problems. Pay attention to symptoms like frequent urination, pain or burning during urination, and cloudy urine. If you suspect a UTI, get your urine tested and take corrective measures immediately.

Additional Tips:

- Home-Cooked Meals: Prepare and eat meals at home to ensure a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins. This also helps limit excess salt, sugar, and saturated fat.

- Maintain a Healthy Weight: Regular exercise and a balanced diet can lower the risk of kidney disease and related conditions.

- Get Sufficient Sleep: Sleep is vital for overall health.

- Lead a Stress-Free Life: Learn to manage stress and tension to maintain kidney health.

By following these golden rules, you can protect your kidneys and ensure they remain healthy and functional for life. Remember, kidneys work silently, so it is your responsibility to keep them healthy for a happy life.
