In this interview, Jeffrey Cancilla will answer some of the most important questions you should ask Before hiring a lawyer.
Why are you seeking legal advice?
The number one question is what do you need help with? Some of the most common answers are to this questuon are: I’m seeking legal advice because I’ve recently been involved in a car accident that has left me with significant injuries and concerns about my future. I live in New York City, and I am looking for a New York State personal injury attorney to represent me. I am new to New York, and I am seeking legal representation as I feel that a personal injury lawyer is an important tool in getting me the justice I deserve, as well as the compensation I need to return to my life and to pay for my physical therapy.
What is your budget?
You should figure out your total budget beforehand. Knowing your expenses and how much you can save before the wedding will be crucial to manage and plan the wedding with a lot of ease.
Can you pay the lawyer before the wedding?
If the lawyer is already booked before you know, he/she can’t be squeezed in later.
Will the lawyer deliver the services on time?
This depends on the lawyer and the client’s budget, too. A good lawyer won’t take the clients’ money, then takes months to deliver. All lawyers will provide services on time in order to please the client.
What happens if I lose my bridesmaid?
A bridesmaid is like a security guard for your wedding. So if you lose one, it would make you lose one and can create a lot of issues for your wedding day.
Your case has been filed. Now what?
First, begin the communications with the other side to understand the timing of them receiving the case. Given that most lawyers who practice in New York are currently booked with other matters, it may take a few weeks before you get a response to your email or phone call. Be patient and refrain from getting frustrated if they have to ask their paralegal or assistant to contact you.
You then should schedule the first appointment. During the appointment, you will get a sense of the attorney’s personality and his approach to the case. Be sure to show him/her the documentation and the settlement agreement.
All of the documents can be provided via email, but it is not always necessary. If you have the settlement agreement, you can even send the hard copy via snail mail.
What are your strengths and weaknesses as a litigant?
I am probably more strategic than a lot of lawyers. I do try to look at both sides of the law, but I’m always careful not to believe one side above the other. I’ll always approach a case thinking it through and deciding which side is right.
In cases where I have a strong personal connection to a client, it can also be an advantage because I can make a stronger emotional appeal.
How do you deal with unmet needs?
I am a big believer in mediation.
At the end of the day, in any argument between you and your lawyer, you need to be comfortable that you are going to be OK. Mediation makes sure you get what you are seeking without having to get into a bad place that may lead you to compromise on a major point.
How do you manage your professional and personal life?
I am very goal-oriented.
When will the case be resolved?
Cancilla said one of the worst things a client can do is settle a case before the matter is heard. “Some people do it as a matter of convenience, but clients are better served when they handle the case in court, instead of settling,” he said.
Cancilla said when the case is finalized in court, then the client will receive a written copy of the judgment and at the same time, the lawyers will get paid. “However, if the matter is still in court, the client is also entitled to know the schedule, timeframe, and a non-binding estimated date when the case will be over,” he added.
Who will give evidence?
According to the legal expert, Jeffrey Cancilla, it is very important to be made aware of the other parties who are going to give evidence.
