Imran Khan: A Journey from Cricket Legend to the People’s Voice

How a sportsman’s dream turned into a political revolution in Pakistan

By Muhammad YasirPublished 5 months ago 4 min read

Imran Khan’s story is unlike any other in Pakistan’s political landscape. From the cricket field to the corridors of power, from lifting the World Cup in 1992 to becoming the country’s Prime Minister in 2018, Khan has lived multiple lives—each defined by resilience, charisma, and controversy. Today, he stands not just as a political leader but as a symbol of defiance, especially for Pakistan’s younger generation who see in him a reflection of their hopes and frustrations.

Born in 1952 in Lahore to a middle-class family, Imran Khan was educated at Aitchison College and later at Oxford University. His early years were marked by ambition and discipline. It was on the cricket pitch, however, that his charisma first captured the imagination of millions. As a fast bowler and all-rounder, Khan led Pakistan with sheer determination. His crowning moment came in 1992, when under his captaincy, Pakistan won its first and only Cricket World Cup. That victory elevated him to the status of a national hero, someone who could unite a divided nation under a single banner of pride.

But cricket was only the first act of his life. Retiring from the sport, Khan turned his attention to philanthropy. He founded the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, inspired by the death of his mother. The hospital became the first of its kind in Pakistan to provide world-class treatment to cancer patients, many of whom could not afford medical care. This achievement gave Khan immense credibility and demonstrated his ability to translate vision into reality. For many, it was proof that he could take on bigger challenges—including politics.

In 1996, Khan launched his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). His message was clear: justice, accountability, and an end to corruption. But his early years in politics were anything but smooth. PTI struggled for votes, and Khan was often mocked as a political outsider. For more than a decade, he was dismissed as a dreamer with little chance of challenging Pakistan’s entrenched political dynasties—the Sharifs and the Bhuttos. Yet, he remained persistent, slowly building a grassroots movement. His honesty, simplicity, and reputation as a national hero earned him respect, even when his party barely made it to the parliament.

The turning point came around 2011, when Khan drew massive crowds in Lahore and Karachi. His rallies attracted young Pakistanis, many of whom had never been politically active before. Social media amplified his message, portraying him as a clean alternative to the corrupt elites. PTI’s slogan of “Naya Pakistan” (New Pakistan) became a rallying cry. By 2013, PTI had emerged as a strong opposition force, and in 2018, Khan finally became Prime Minister of Pakistan.

As Prime Minister, Khan’s tenure was filled with challenges. He inherited a struggling economy, mounting debt, and a complicated relationship with Pakistan’s powerful military. His government pursued welfare programs like the Ehsaas Program, aimed at poverty alleviation, and Sehat Sahulat Cards to provide healthcare. Internationally, he tried to position Pakistan as a peace broker in South Asia, especially during tense standoffs with India. Yet, his administration also faced criticism for rising inflation, economic instability, and curbs on media freedoms.

Despite the controversies, one fact became clear: Imran Khan had transformed Pakistan’s politics. He broke the monopoly of traditional political families and gave the youth a sense of empowerment. Unlike many leaders before him, Khan maintained a personal connection with ordinary citizens. His speeches, filled with passion and religious undertones, resonated with those who felt ignored by the system.

The real test of his popularity came after his removal from power in 2022 through a parliamentary vote of no-confidence. For many leaders, such an exit would mark the end of their political career. For Khan, it became the beginning of his second revolution. Instead of retreating, he mobilized millions of supporters across the country. His rallies turned into massive displays of public anger against the political elite and the establishment. Despite facing arrests, restrictions, and numerous legal cases, his popularity surged rather than declined.

Gallup Pakistan surveys in 2023 and 2024 consistently showed Imran Khan as the most popular political leader in the country, with approval ratings above 60%. Even from jail, he continued to influence the political discourse. Social media platforms like Twitter and TikTok were flooded with hashtags in his support, proving that his message had transcended traditional campaigning methods.

For his supporters, Khan embodies hope. They see him as a leader who refuses to bow down to external pressures, whether from foreign governments or domestic institutions. For his critics, however, Khan is a populist who thrives on confrontation and rhetoric, sometimes at the expense of stability. Yet, regardless of where one stands, his influence on Pakistan’s politics is undeniable.

Khan’s story is ultimately about resilience. From being a sports legend to a philanthropist, from a political outsider to Prime Minister, and now as a symbol of defiance against the system—he continues to redefine leadership in Pakistan. His journey reflects the aspirations of millions of Pakistanis who long for change, justice, and dignity. Whether or not he returns to power, Imran Khan has already left a permanent mark on Pakistan’s political history.

As Pakistan navigates an uncertain future, one thing is clear: Imran Khan remains the most significant political figure of his generation. His life is proof that leadership is not about holding office alone—it is about inspiring people to believe in something bigger than themselves.
