I Was the Roommate Horror Story

I made my roommate drop out of college.

By Amy ElainaPublished 8 years ago 3 min read

In the spring of my senior year of high school all of my friends had begun finding their future college roommates. Posting "ads" on facebook, messaging random people, doing whatever it would take for them to find the perfect roomie.

I, on the other hand, had absolutely no desire to go out of my way to find the perfect roommate. I was a shy 18-year-old girl who had a small friend group and never ventured outside of them all four years of high school. I was comfortable and I was OK with it.

I took the easy route and decided upon random roommate. Around the beginning of July I received a letter with my future roommate's information. Her name was Sarah, she lived in a small town that I had never heard of about 30 minutes away from university. I decided to get outside of my shell and see if we could meet up before school had started in early august.

We couldn't settle on a time to meet up but we both had to move in before school started since we were freshman. The first day we met all was good. Sarah was a very outgoing and energetic girl and I was still the same old introvert me. She introduced me to a lot of people and I made a lot of new friends because of her.

All seemed well throughout the first few weeks of school. Sarah had found a guy and I had once again fallen into this small group of friends. Spending most of my nights in my room, I began to get to know Sarah's guy, Jacob.

In the beginning, things with Jacob were weird. Jacob and Sarah were very close and ALWAYS had too much PDA going on. They spent every night in our room, but I was OK with it. They didn't bother me and I didn't bother them. They spent most nights watching movies and one night even had a Harry Potter Marathon.

While Sarah and Jacob were a thing, Jacob and I became really close friends. Sarah's school work began to be too much for her so she broke things off with Jacob. But I still wanted to see Jacob.

I gave it a few weeks until I started bringing his name up in conversations and bringing him back to our room. After about a month Jacob and I were dating and things were official between us.

Things for Sarah kept getting worse. She became so stressed that she dropped her major. She thought about picking up a new one but eventually decided that the best thing was for her to move back home and drop out at semester.

A few weeks after second semester had started I texted her to see how she was doing and if things were looking up for her. We ended up having a great conversation, somewhere along the way I decided to ask her what pushed her over the edge and made her decide to move back home. She replied with a long explanation stating the seeing Jacob with me in our room was too much for her. She couldn't handle it and all of her attempts to talk to me about it and failed.

At that moment, I realized that I had caused a girl to drop out of college. A sweet girl with so much potential, to drop out of college and move back home with her parents. I felt terrible and to this day refuse to date any of my guy friends.

Sarah ended up going back to school the next semester. She however did transfer schools and doesn't exactly talk to me much anymore, but I don't blame her. I wouldn't talk to me either.
