Seun Okinbaloye speaks out

By Jide OkonjoPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

Rumors can spread like wildfire, and in today’s social media age, a single misinterpretation can snowball into a full-blown controversy. Nigerian journalist and Channels TV correspondent, Seun Okinbaloye, recently found himself at the center of one such storm after a video of him attending an event at his alma mater went viral.

The video, which captured Okinbaloye at the induction ceremony of new students in the Performing and Film Arts department, sparked baseless speculation, with some accusing him of being involved in occultic activities. The journalist, however, has firmly addressed the claims, making it clear that there was nothing sinister about his presence at the event, during a recent Channels TV broadcast. Here's what Seun Okinbaloye said.

Speaking about the viral video and the controversy surrounding it, Seun Okinbaloye said:

SEUN OKINBALOYE: There was a video that I made—I went back to my alma mater and my first degree, where I studied Theater Arts. There is a cultural practice within the legal profession where you have to attend the final dinner before the Call to Bar—it's very important. There are people who have been asked to resit their Call to Bar because they missed the dinner. Similarly, in the medical field, the induction program is critical.

This was an induction program for new students in the Performing and Film Arts department, where I did mine about 25 or so years ago. I went back to honor them, and I prayed for them to be welcomed into the creative community.

Guess what people said? They said they didn’t know that I had traditional occultic powers. Some people—even family and friends—told me to go and dispel the rumors. I said, "Why should I dispel it? It does not make sense."

When the video was posted, the titles clearly stated that it was a creative student event. But somehow, that information was removed, and people started claiming I was a member of a secret cult.

I am a child of God. I’m a Christian, born into a Christian family. And well, if standing firm in that is what they mean by dispelling, then fine.

Rumors can be very painful.
