Billu Bhai’s Realization
Category: Human Interest / Life Lessons
His real name was Bilal, but everyone in the village called him Billu Bhai. He was the eldest child in a large family, with parents, siblings, and relatives all living together. Growing up, Bilal had been quite weak, both physically and mentally. His childhood was marked by illness, which affected his ability to concentrate in school. Learning was a constant struggle, and he barely managed to complete his education up to the tenth grade. Now, at twenty-five, Bilal was hardworking, reliable, and always willing to help others. His father had given him a rickshaw, which became his source of daily income.
For some time, however, Bilal Bhai had been feeling increasingly downcast. A persistent thought weighed on his mind: that nobody cared for him, that nobody loved him or valued him. He observed the way passengers treated him—many spoke harshly, some with no respect, and most didn’t notice how hard he worked. Because he was poor, he felt society ignored his dignity. This constant mistreatment led him to withdraw from everyone. His once cheerful personality faded; he spoke little, laughed less, and avoided social interactions. Everyone around him noticed the change, yet nothing seemed to reach him.
Among his few friends, Nazim stood out. Nazim had no family of his own, so he often reminded Bilal of his blessings. “Bilal! You’re lucky to have a family. Look at me—no one cares about me.” But Bilal Bhai would hear these words without responding.
Eventually, he made a firm decision: he would not involve himself in anyone else’s life, help no one, and speak as little as possible. “If nobody asks about me, I won’t ask about anyone either,” he thought. Days passed, and Bilal became even more isolated. His sadness deepened, and he grew irritable. Simple conversations became difficult, and soon he noticed that he was more troubled than ever.
One day, exhausted from a long day of work, he stopped his rickshaw near a park and lay down on the grass to rest. As he relaxed, his eyes fell upon a crow nearby. The crow was injured, unable to fly. Another crow sat close by, cawing loudly, protecting its wounded companion.
Bilal Bhai watched with interest. His heart urged him to pick up the injured crow and place it safely in its nest, but he had resolved not to help anyone anymore, so he remained still. Then he noticed a cat approaching, trying to attack the wounded crow. But the first crow, along with a small group of other crows that had gathered, protected their injured friend. Witnessing their unity and mutual care, Bilal’s eyes welled up with tears.
“These birds help each other, yet I, as a human, fail to help anyone,” he thought. Overcome with emotion, he finally stood up. He carefully picked up the injured crow, placed it in its nest, and walked home, his heart filled with a newfound determination. He decided that no matter what, he would now help people and serve those in need.
Lost in thought, he was driving his rickshaw when suddenly he lost control. The vehicle swerved onto the sidewalk and fell into a nearby drain. Bilal Bhai was knocked unconscious, hitting his head and bleeding.
When he awoke, he found himself in a hospital bed, surrounded by his worried family. Their faces reflected concern and care. At that moment, Bilal Bhai realized how much everyone loved him and cared for his well-being. He understood that he was never truly alone.
Tears of joy filled his eyes, and he felt a wave of shame for his previous thoughts. He had been wrong to believe that nobody cared for him. In the end, he recognized the value of family, empathy, and the importance of staying connected to those who care for him.
