What are weight loss pills?

Weight loss pills are tablets taken as part of a healthy diet and exercise regime to encourage weight loss. There are many kinds available, but most aren’t considered effective by the NHS.

Some types of diet pill may be ineffective in reducing weight. Others may be effective but considered too risky to use by UK or European medical agencies. For this reason, some diet pills that might be available elsewhere in the world won’t be available in the UK.

Weight loss pills containing phentermine and topiramate have been shown to help reduce weight, but they aren’t authorised for use by the European Medicines Agency due to safety concerns. There are other pills that have been banned in the UK.

Do weight pills actually work?

Pills containing the active ingredient orlistat, such as alli, are considered an effective weight loss aid by the NHS. Other types may have had successful clinical trials, but aren’t yet recognised by the NHS simply because more research needs to be done.

It’s important to remember that diet pills need to be taken as part of a healthy and balanced diet. When taken on their own, without any lifestyle changes, it’s unlikely that a weight loss pill will have any effect.

Are weight loss pills safe for your body?

Some "weight loss" supplements can damage your health along with your wallet. And, they rarely help you lose weight.

In recent years, many tainted weight loss products have been sold in the U.S. Hidden ingredients have included stimulants, antidepressants, diuretics, seizure medicines, and laxatives. This list includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and drugs which are illegal to sell in the United States.

Sibutramine is the most common drug found in contaminated weight loss supplements. Sibutramine is a stimulant and appetite suppressant. At one time, it was sold legally in the U.S. Then, a study showed that the risk was greater than the benefit: people taking sibutramine didn't lose a lot of weight, but they had an increased chance of having high blood pressure, fast heart rate, a heart attack, or a stroke. Sibutramine was withdrawn from the market.

Is there any side effects?

Many stimulant-type weight loss medications like phentermine or diethylpropion are only recommended for short-term use (up to 12 weeks) due to risk of dependence and other side effects. However, orlistat (Alli, Xenical) can be used for longer-term weight loss, including the maintenance of previously lost weight. You can also get Alli at the drugstore without a prescription.

Prescription weight loss drugs such as phentermine and topiramate , bupropion and naltrexone, and liraglutide are used for chronic, long-term weight loss, but only if adequate results occur. In general, if a 3% to 4% weight loss has not been achieved after 12 to 16 weeks, long-term treatment is typically stopped.

Weight loss medications are used alongside a low calorie diet and a doctor-approved exercise plan for best results. You may see a 3% to 9% weight loss with the use of some diet drugs. However, it’s important to know that most people will regain some or all of the weight they lost when they stop using weight loss drugs unless diet and exercise are continued.

Be sure to talk to your doctor for sound advice before starting any weight loss program and understand it will take time and discipline for permanent results. If you stop taking your weight loss medication, continue with your diet and exercise program, as directed by your physician.
