We all have a passion or something we want to work hard for to achieve. We are motivated by something or someone. We have tasks we know that we must complete. Things that are on our todo lists that we must do everyday. Whether it’s starting your own business or working a 9 to 5 just to put food on the table we all must work hard to survive.

Without work we are nothing. Our society tells us we must be on a constant grind if we want to be successful. If you don’t work hard then you won’t succeed. You must work harder than the person next to you or you will fall behind. Get left in the dust. Forgotten about. Is that what you want? To be in second place. Absolutely not, you want to be successful. If you take a break even for a second you are going to be left in the dust.

But is this true? Can we really grind all week and pull ahead? Can we really work without ever taking a break? I don’t think so. Humans were designed to have time off and we need to have breaks. People back in 1882 America put in a place a holiday for workers to take time off. People were being overworked and put in long hours in their factory jobs. This was beginning to take a toll on people and the work they were able to do. So to honor and recognize the working class Labor Day was established and the first holiday was celebrated on September 5th 1882.

Labor day has helped honor those who fought for the workers. They helped fight for fair hours and fair wages. They helped give life to those who made the industrialization of America possible. Without these hardworking men and women America would not be the place it is today.

Studies have shown that taking breaks from work and working less hours can actually help boost productivity. We actually become less productive as we work longer and harder hours.

We don’t like to believe this becuase we are addicted to our work. We want to believe that the more we do the more successful we can become. Now don’t hear me say that working hard is bad. Hard work is important but just as important as rest and time off. We need to live our lives in balance and have both. We must rest so that we can work hard. If we never rest where does our energy for our work come from?

So today as you take the day off work remember how your work is important but so is having days off. You can find that if you are focused at work and not thinking about work when you are away you can become more productive in the hours you are at work.

I hope today was a restful beautiful day for you. And if you didn’t have today off that’s okay. Just remember to find a day in the week to have to yourself to be refreshed and heal. You need rest. Rest is very important to the human body. Working hard is a great quality to have and is a much needed quality in people today. But don’t overwork yourself. I promise the rest you take will be worth it.
