Driving, the Daily Struggle

By Makieba HattonPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

So, I took my partner out for a slice of pizza and a sweet treat at a creamery in the Montrose area of H-Town. We returned to our vehicle after purchasing to waffle cones filled with sheer ice cream goodness to enjoy our ice cream in our vehicle. After we were secure in our vehicle we noticed a driver of a very new Ford Ranger truck having difficulty pulling into one of the more than generous empty parking spaces. The driver pulled into the parking space crooked yet within the two yellow outlined lines but decided to back out and attempt to pull into the parking space evenly. Well of course the driver increased the degree of difficulty in parking as if it were a gymnastics routine and the front left driver's side of the Ford Ranger obviously hit/scraped the back right passenger's side of a four door compact vehicle. My partner and I watched as the driver of the Ford Ranger completed the driver's goal of pulling into the parking space evenly, and the driver and the driver's minor-aged son exited the vehicle casually strolling into the creamery without any regard for the vehicle the driver just struck. The driver walked in a manner that reflected possible dizziness or balance concerns but none the less carried on as if nothing out of the ordinary just occurred. Could it be that the driver had no idea that the driver hit the compact vehicle? Could it be that the minor-aged son who appeared to be maybe eight to ten years of age had no idea that the driver hit the compact vehicle?

Scrutiny:

Now my partner is outraged as am I, and my partner demands that I wait for the driver of the compact vehicle or the driver of the Ford Ranger come to come out of the creamery so I can inform both or one or the other that the Ford Ranger inadvertently struck the compact car. Of course the driver of the compact car comes out of the creamery first and gets into the vehicle without any suspicion that the vehicle was struck by the Ford Ranger next to it. The driver of the compact vehicle appeared to be searching for something in the vehicle and I with my mask on maintained about 100 feet of distance attempting to obtain the visual attention of the compact vehicle to not cause any alarm rather indicate my need to provide some information. Finally after four minutes of waiting for the driver of the compact vehicle to merely glance upward, I was appeased and I signaled for the driver of the compact vehicle to lower the driver's side window as I provided the information, from about 20 feet away, regarding the driver's vehicle being struck by the Ford Ranger parked next to the driver. The driver of the vehicle let out a deep sigh, a soft expletive, placed the vehicle in park, and exited the vehicle around the back side to assess the damage. The damage was more extensive than I though it would be. The driver ran a hand over the damage and looked at it deeply. Then to my complete surprise the driver said "Thank you for telling me, as I would have done the same thing. There is definitely damage but I think it can be buffed out so I'm not going to worry about it." We said good evening and the driver of the compact vehicle returned to the driver's seat of the vehicle and just as if nothing out of the ordinary occurred the driver was gone. I returned to our vehicle, updated my partner of the outcome, and we remained baffled as to why the driver of the compact vehicle did not want to pursue the matter at least to the lowest level of acknowledging the damage caused by the Ford Ranger to the driver of the Ford Ranger. We decided to leave before the driver of the Ford Ranger returned to the vehicle to back out of the parking space as our vehicle was directly behind the Ford Ranger in an allotted parking space.

Moral of the this story:

Never assume to know the values of others. What's important to us may be no big deal to another. Why do you think the driver of the compact vehicle chose to leave the seen without any acknowledgement from the driver of the Ford Ranger of hitting the compact vehicle and causing damage?
