Exploring Austria’s Hidden Hiking Trails: A Guide for Adventure Seekers

Explore Austria Journey with me

By Emma LiamPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Last year, I had the amazing chance to travel from Canada to Austria with a friend. We were excited to see Austria’s stunning landscapes and explore some hidden trails away from the usual tourist spots. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the Alps, charming villages, and beautiful lakes. Our goal was to go beyond the well-known hiking spots and discover trails that offered both adventure and peace.

Before we set out, I packed up my gear, including my backpack that’s been with me on countless trails. I’d heard a lot about how Austrians are passionate about outdoor activities, with nearly 70% of the population regularly hiking, biking, or skiing. It was clear that here, nature isn’t just scenery—it’s a way of life.

This was my first time using my ImpetroGear modular backpacks. As i wanted to travel light, I decided to use the 33L mountain pack pro https://impetrogear.com/products/impetro-gear-bags?variant=50939271217312 as my checked in luggage and the backpack held up really well to the wear and tear.

1. Krimml Waterfall Trail: Nature’s Majesty

Our first hike was the Krimml Waterfall Trail. This 8.2 km path led us toward Austria’s tallest waterfall, with the sound of rushing water growing louder as we hiked closer. At 380 meters high, the falls were powerful and mesmerizing, with mist rising in the sunlight. I took a moment to just take it in—this was exactly the kind of natural beauty we’d come for.

2. Vienna City Hiking Trail 1: Urban Escape

Next, we explored the Vienna City Hiking Trail 1, a 10.9 km loop offering a mix of nature and city views. This trail took us through green vineyards with breathtaking views over Vienna and the Danube River. I loved the blend of urban and natural landscapes. It was one of those trails perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

3. Olpererhütte Trail: Alpine Heights

One of my favorites was the hike to the Olpererhütte in the Zillertal Alps, a 6.9 km trail that was a bit more challenging. But the views were worth every step. Along the way, we met other hikers who were equally taken by the beauty of the mountains. We stopped at the hut to take in the views and share a quick meal, feeling on top of the world. 4. Vorderer Gosausee: Lakeside Serenity

The Vorderer Gosausee trail was a 7.9 km loop around a crystal-clear lake, surrounded by the Dachstein mountains. The lake’s still water reflected the mountain peaks, creating an unforgettable scene. We took our time here, having a small picnic by the lake, completely immersed in the peaceful surroundings. It was the perfect way to enjoy a slower, quieter side of Austria.

5. Rudolf’s Tower: History with a View

For our last hike, we chose the Rudolf’s Tower trail from Hallstatt. This short 3.9 km but steep trail led us to an incredible viewpoint overlooking the town and lake. Climbing to the top, we were rewarded with a breathtaking panorama. I couldn’t help but think how lucky we were to have found these special spots, each offering something unique. I must say that during this visit, having the ImpetroGear backpacks made a huge difference. I took the hike pack, ski pack and mountain pack and mixed and matched the backpacks I wanted to use with the terrain and length of excursion. In the case of the ski pack – although it has features skiers would find handy, there’s no reason you can’t use it as a hiking pack and the fact that the mountain pack also doubled up as my checked-in luggage was an added bonus! Finally, i could easily roll-up the ski and hike packs, so they hardly took up any space.

Austria is a beautiful country with amazing and welcoming people and truly beautiful landscapes. The time flew by so quickly and in hindsight, I wished that we had booked a few more days as our trip was way too short. I hope to be back soon!
