Dream Chaser

Edwin sits, frantically studying his finances, thumbing through bill after bill trying to figure out how to manage what he sees as the opportunity of a lifetime to study music if he can afford it. As time goes by, that goal seemingly beyond reach, he decides to give himself a mental rest break and picks up his journal to begin the lyrics of a new song he had been running through his mind. As he picks it up, he notices the rough shape his book is now in, far from it was when he came across it, a mysterious little book that somehow ended up mixed in with his school things with the only information in it the words “Dream Chasing” along with the date March 18,2001 written the the faintest of pencil marks.

Dream chasing was a fitting intro for Edwin. As the years pass by his dreams are of sound stages and microphones. Crowds and bright lights and that now not so mysterious book has became his lifeline to the dream. It’s pages filled now with songs recalling life and love, love lost and good times. Since he found it, this mystery is now an escape from the stress felt by all to many across the world.

Life dealt Edwin a hand that yielded a short youth as he had to go to work while still in school to support his family. That dream lived on in his spare time but it’s pursuit had almost faded away as his book became a place to vent and channel the emotion that he dealt with from day to day.

After falling asleep mid lyric, Edwin quickly jumps out of bed leaving his book, his world, out in the open for all to see. While Edwin is out, his mother finds this book and begins to thumb through the pages of her son’s mind and quickly becomes lost in his captivating words. His title less last entry sticks out the most so she takes a picture of it as a momento of the elegance that her child is capable of. While browsing social media, she runs across an add for a young songwriter’s contest and on a whim decides to enter Edwin’s work without his knowing. It is that very quick act that will soon become the cornerstone of both of their futures. Those words, penned in a moment of release, took off quicker than a bolt of lightening.

Around 30 days have passed as Edwin sits at home clicking through Netflix to find a movie or a series to binge watch on a well deserved paid vacation from work, that once mysterious little black book sitting at his side. As he watches a movie dozing off in between scenes he is startled by a knock on his door in the middle of the afternoon. Cracking it open, blinded by the brightness of the sun, a stranger stands with a camera and microphone in hand as he wonders what exactly is going on. Eyes still have open, he barely contemplates the congratulations being given towards him as if he feels it is indeed a dream but reality quickly sets in when a check is produced with his name on it and in the memo written, winner for an unnamed song. It dawns on Edwin what is going on as he goes from half a sleep to near cardiac arrest with excitement. Here he stands with a check in hand for 20,000 dollars for his work but then realizes he never submitted anything. Stammering through his words he asks how and is told about the acts of his mother on that cold day he was uncharacteristically late for work. 20,000 and a recording contract because his dream was alive not only in his heart but in the hearts of those who cared for him most. The thoughts of what do do with his money focus on one and only one thing. His mother, who had given everything to him often at personal sacrifice. A dream indeed fulfilled as Edwin began a successful career. That money, given away, Nothing was worth more to Edwin than the love of his family. So to his mother, who was the reason for it all, the money was given to provide the family a new car and the ability to stabilize their family at the moment and for many years to come. The title of the song you ask, the mysterious words written in the cover of that mysterious black book when he found it. Dream Chasing.
