Christina Applegate delves into the profound melancholy that has enveloped her since her 2021 multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

"Presently, I'm ensnared in a despondency that I haven't encountered for years," Applegate reveals on the newest installment of MeSsy, the podcast she co-hosts with friend Jamie-Lynn Sigler. "A genuine, to-hell-with-everything despondency that's somewhat alarming because it feels inescapably bleak. I'm submerged in this darkness that I can't recall feeling for... I don't even know how long, perhaps two decades."

This episode was recorded shortly after Applegate, 52, unexpectedly attended the Emmy Awards in January, an event she described as "the most arduous day of my existence," confessing that she needed to rest for "two days" afterward.

Reflecting on the toll MS has exacted on her, Applegate confesses, "In all honesty...I derive no pleasure from life. I don't relish it. Nothing brings me joy anymore."

Sigler, who has been contending with MS for over 20 years since her diagnosis during her time on The Sopranos, empathizes with Applegate's plight.

"Living in a debilitated body is excruciating. It's undeniably challenging. I will never diminish your experience, and I stand with you," she affirms. "But the struggle intensifies when you juxtapose it with your former self...Once we reach a point of accepting this as our perpetual reality...[managing MS] shouldn't be a pretext for abandoning life because I sit across from you, and you still make me laugh like no one else can. You still elicit my smiles. You make me feel cherished."

Sigler, 43, who shared in March the significance of her bond with Applegate, reiterates, "I can't permit you to surrender. I need you to persevere for my sake."

Applegate is "astonishingly resilient," Sigler asserts: "I hope this podcast will further illuminate your worth and reveal how immensely strong you are and how much you deserve to give yourself a chance."

The Dead to Me star admits to a hesitancy in seeking therapy since her MS diagnosis while filming the show's finale. "I've evaded therapy since my diagnosis because I'm terrified of starting to cry and being unable to stop," Applegate confides. "I'm so petrified of those emotional floodgates opening and never closing." Nonetheless, she has reconnected with her longtime therapist.

Sigler encourages her to allow herself to be vulnerable: "I believe you owe it to yourself to weep and truly, truly delve into those feelings...You must permit yourself to experience those emotions. You can't keep shoving them away, otherwise, you'll remain stuck where you are now. You're in a sort of limbo, you know?"

The Hour has drawn near and the moon was split ˹in two˺.

Whereas the preceding Surah An-Najm had ended on a note of warning to disbelievers in the words: اَزِفَۃِ الاٰزِفَۃ azifat-il-` azifah, i.e., the Hour of their doom has drawn near, the present Surah opens with a similar sentence, "The Hour (of doom) has drawn near" and this statement is followed by one of its proofs, that is, the appearance of the miracle of the moon being split asunder.

There are many signs of the Day of Doom; one of them is the advent of the last of the Prophets Sayyidna Muhammad ﷺ itself, as reported in a hadith 'I was sent like this with the last Hour' and he pointed with his middle and index fingers.

There are many other Traditions mentioning that the advent of the Holy Prophet ﷺ is close to the Day of doom. Likewise, a great sign of Doomsday is the miracle of the Prophet ﷺ when he split the moon into two pieces, then he rejoined them.

Also, the miracle of 'moon-splitting' is significant from another point of view: Just as Allah's power split the moon into two, so will planets and stars be destroyed by Him by breaking them into very small pieces which is not impossible, as has been proved by the miracle of splitting the moon.
