Ads to promote all kinds of goods and services are common in various forms of media. From TV to online videos and pre-movie showings in theatres, they are a near-unavoidable part of modern life.
To an extent, it’s for good reason. Companies and corporations do need to spread the word about themselves if they are to get customers in the first place. However, the fact of the matter is that ads can be pretty grating to get through.
When one is trying to see what happens next during an episode’s dramatic moment or being interrupted right in the middle of a playlist, seeing an advertisement for the latest fashion line is frequently rather jarring. On top of that, a lengthy and/or poorly made ad may suck out all the joy from watching something.
What, then, makes some advertisements terrible and obnoxious? Is it their timing? Their style? Heck, the very thing they’re advertising? This article will go over the things that make annoying ads unbearable to watch.
Length
A major factor in an advertisement’s annoyance level is its length.
An average ad is often about 15 to 30 seconds for videos and on TV and a minute or two in trailer form. Online, it might even be skippable after five seconds of viewing. That being said, not all of them are like this.
Unfortunately, advertisements for non-media products which last more than 30 seconds are popping up more and more. While they are (thankfully) still not the norm, watching a three-minute ad before getting back to the main video could be a hassle. This doubly goes for unskippable ones.
Many people feel like they have better things to do than waiting out a long, unskippable advertisement. Life is short, after all. And length isn’t the only thing making them cave in to ad blockers or turning off the TV.
Quality
A good advertisement for a product is actually appealing to the eyes and ears of audiences. Otherwise, they’re more likely to zone out than pay attention to what’s being advertised.
Ads can be filmed, animated, or use a hybrid of the two. If they get filmed, good filmography - including quality setup and lighting - is key. Should they choose to go the animated route instead, fluid and error-free animation will really help the ad come to life. Either way, acting abilities on the actors’ and/or actresses’ parts may make or break an ad’s appeal.
On top of the above, appealing advertisements typically include a decent soundtrack to go along with them. While they don’t have to break the bank and get the most expensive chart-topping single of the year, the background music should at least be more than tolerable. Clear audio quality when it comes to speech is also ideal.
Accuracy
Finally, an advertisement that outright lies will not be looked upon fondly once the truth is unraveled - which will inevitably, for the most part, occur someday.
A good example of advertising dishonesty is claiming a product is cheaper or more free than it actually is. Oh, so there’s a buy one/get one free offer? Well, guess what - the offer only applies to limited conditions you’ll only see for a split second.
Another way to annoy people with your advertisement is through basic failures to fact check. Sure, you’re not intentionally lying. But even if you apologize later and correct your mistakes, there’s a good chance you will already look rather incompetent and not worthy to break into the industry you’re trying to sell in.
…
When ads do their jobs, they can help make sales skyrocket. However, the failures of so many to do so are good reasons for people to click off.
