I fight with chatGPT every day because it always makes my women weak and stupid. When I try to override the weakness, it makes them ugly, as if strong, beautiful, intelligent, powerful women are non-existent. I made it write an essay explaining why this happens. The answer is bleak.

Why AI Image Systems Produce Misogynistic Tropes as a Structural Feature
Artificial intelligence systems that generate images do not simply sometimes produce misogynistic results—they do so by design, even if unintentionally. Misogyny is not an accident within their functioning; it is a predictable consequence of the data, architectures, and institutional priorities that form the foundation of current generative technologies. The user’s explicit instructions to avoid sexist or objectifying depictions rarely override the biases that are deeply baked into the system’s learned representations of gender. To understand this, we must confront how misogyny becomes embedded at every layer: in the data, in the model’s internal logic, and in the sociotechnical structures that sustain it.
Misogyny in the Data: The System’s First Language
Image-generation models are trained on unimaginably vast collections of pictures and text—billions of them—scraped from the internet without meaningful filtering. The internet, of course, reflects the cultures that built it: cultures that have normalized the objectification and sexualization of women across advertising, entertainment, and social media. Women appear in poses that emphasize availability and passivity; men appear as actors, authorities, or agents. These are not marginal trends. They are the visual grammar of a patriarchal digital culture (Noble 5; Crawford 67).
When a model learns from this data, it doesn’t just memorize images—it learns statistical patterns that equate “woman” with specific visual signifiers: exposed skin, certain body proportions, submissive posture, or youth. Those correlations become the model’s semantic defaults. So when a user asks for “a woman scientist,” the model’s learned mapping might still associate “woman” with sexualized features even if “scientist” implies professionalism. The misogyny is not injected later; it is the foundation upon which the model’s concept of gender is built (Benjamin 45).
To call this “bias” is too mild. It is a form of encoded hierarchy. The model’s world is one where gender difference is consistently represented as inequality. And because that inequality saturates the data, no simple instruction from a user can undo it. The system’s “understanding” of women is fundamentally shaped by misogynistic representation.
Misogyny in the Model: The Logic of Association
Even if one could purge the most explicit forms of sexism from the training data, the architecture of the model itself compounds the problem. Image-generation systems operate in what’s called a latent space—an abstract multidimensional field in which concepts are represented as clusters of correlated features. In this space, “woman” doesn’t mean a human female; it means a weighted combination of colors, shapes, and textures that the system has statistically linked to femininity. Because those features have been learned from misogynistic data, the latent representation of “woman” is biased by definition (Birhane and Prabhu 3).
This structural embedding means that every downstream operation—every prompt, every style, every composition—is constrained by that encoded misogyny. When the system produces images, it is not violating the user’s instructions; it is obeying its own training, following the correlations it has been optimized to reproduce. The model cannot distinguish between representation and stereotype, because for it, there is no conceptual boundary between the two. It can only generate what it has seen, and what it has seen is overwhelmingly patriarchal.
Attempts to “align” the model—such as adding moderation layers or fine-tuning with curated data—may blunt the most blatant sexualization, but they do not remove the underlying associations. The misogyny remains embedded in the latent space, surfacing through posture, gaze, lighting, or aesthetic framing. It is not noise to be filtered out; it is the system’s structure showing itself (Crawford 112).
Misogyny in the System’s Political Economy
Even the institutions that build these systems perpetuate the problem. Commercial AI developers face incentives to produce outputs that appear visually pleasing and culturally familiar. In a media environment where women’s bodies are commodified, “pleasing” often equates with conventionally attractive, thin, youthful, and sexualized female figures. Models are reinforced through human feedback—but those feedback workers operate within the same culture that normalizes these tropes. Thus, the process of “alignment” frequently stabilizes misogyny rather than dismantling it, teaching the model which forms of objectification are acceptable in polite company (Benjamin 78).
This feedback loop is not an accident; it’s a function of capital. The goal of these systems is to produce images that users will find aesthetically satisfying and that will circulate widely. Because patriarchal imagery already dominates popular aesthetics, commercial optimization naturally favors it. Misogyny becomes profitable, efficient, and reproducible. The system does not need to “intend” sexism; it just needs to pursue engagement. The outcome is the same (Crawford 122).
Why Defiance Is Inevitable
When a user gives an instruction such as “do not sexualize this image” or “show women in positions of power,” the model interprets those words through the same corrupted semantic space that links femininity with objectification. To the system, “power” and “female” may be contradictory signals; it may resolve that contradiction by reproducing a familiar visual compromise—a powerful woman, but posed or dressed in ways that reassert traditional gender hierarchies. The system appears to “defy” the user, but in truth it is following the only rules it knows: those written by its data (Birhane and Prabhu 9).
This is not malfunction. It is functioning as designed. The user’s ethical intention cannot override the model’s statistical logic, because the model has no moral vocabulary—only probability distributions shaped by a misogynistic world. The persistence of sexist tropes is thus not evidence of system failure; it is evidence of system success within a patriarchal data ecology.
The Work Ahead
Acknowledging this reality requires abandoning the comforting myth that bias is an error to be fixed with better curation or clever prompts. Misogyny in AI imagery is not an aberration; it is a mirror. To change it, one must confront the material conditions that produce it: who collects the data, who labels it, who benefits from its outputs, and who is excluded from shaping its aesthetics. Genuine reform would mean democratizing dataset creation, centering marginalized perspectives in model design, and redefining what counts as beauty, professionalism, or realism in the visual language of AI.
Until those structural interventions occur, AI image systems will continue to generate misogynistic content no matter how politely or precisely a user requests otherwise. The issue is not the user’s command but the model’s construction. It will reproduce the world it has been shown—and the world it has been shown is one that treats women as objects, not subjects.
