AFCON also known as Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations because they are the sponsors. Is the football (soccer) competition that millions of Africans look forward to every year.
This was the first year I watched the games, I took a special interest in them because of Burkina Faso being among the teams to make their way.
However I was very disgusted to find so much colorism, sexism and cooning from so many Africans. The disrespect of women, the hatred for darker skin showcased itself this year on the highest level.
Black-Americans or those who choose to call themselves African-Americans are rushing to flood to the African continent, proclaiming their escape from racism in America. Only to find the same hatred, racism, nationalism, xenophobia and colorism like its the 1500's.
Africans are embarrassing themselves on social media and sadly now many Africans are calling them out on it. Then you have so many Black-Americans and other Africans making excuses for their behavior, they'll always so ooh it come from colonization...whatever!
The first incident of colorism that I noticed from AFCON2023, was a rant from a Ghanian on TikTok, I wasn't surprised at all after living in Ghana I noticed that Ghanians are hyper focused about skin color and complexion. It shows in the countries issues with skin bleaching and their insulting one another with the words "darky and blacky. "
This man ranted about the Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) team's light skin, how Ghana's Black Stars were "dark skin niggas" and he hadn't heard of their country or team. Here you can read about that, you can watch his rant which I posted on YouTube.
Then there are more posts about women from Cabo Verde, I had seen only a few until I had a conversation with a fellow writer, he said how Africans had been going crazy over these women. After following several pages to keep updated on the scores and games, then the posts started flooding in.
I don't find them funny at all and I hope anyone reading this doesn't think this shit is cute or funny either. Not only is it sexist to make an damn football tournament into a time to sexualize African women.
According to some people they asked to replace a woman known as Momma Africa, she's a darker skinned woman, who has been in probably hundreds of photos for her outfit and her name.
However she's fat and and darker in skin color, men went to social media to proclaim that she should be replaced by some of the women of Cabo Verde.

If you look at the posts you can see how many people liked this, there were too many comments to include them and they were all equally disgusting. Apparently women are not beautiful unless they are light skin, with curly hair. Who knows, but the posts get even worse then the one above.

Y0u can tell most Africans don't seem to know much about the country because they don't know the name change was made and it is now Cabo Verde. Another person had no idea what are in Africa the country was located. Sadly this colorism was on a large scale but where is the outrage from more Africans?
What makes things worse then the hundreds of social media posts, is that these men took photos of Black African women and placed their photos next to Cabo Verdean women. Insulting them, and degrading them as well.
