ABC Dates

Fun Date Ideas for You & Your Partner

By Madison Rheam, B.A.Published 8 months ago 3 min read

Whether you’ve reached the roommate phase of your relationship, are bored busybodies (like my partner and I), just going through the motions, or simply want to start having fun again, look no further!

What is an ABC date? An ABC date is a date night (or day) centered around a letter of the alphabet including a meal and activity. It’s also a super fun way to get back into experiencing dating with your partner again! Too many times in relationships we tend to settle into our lives with each other and forget the importance of actually 'dating' your partner.

Let’s talk about the importance of dating your partner. A study conducted by the Wheatley Institute in 2023 says that over 52% of U.S. married couples reported never/rarely going on dates together. Couples that continue to 'date' each other report happier moods, higher commitment levels, healthier sex lives, lower stress levels, better communication, and much more. Many of these things have a direct correlation to our physical and mental health. Word on the street is if you date your partner, you’ll live longer. (I don’t know if this is actually true obviously but I can tell you that your relationship will flourish once you start dating your partner again.)

My partner and I started doing ABC dates our first year dating. It started as a fun way to fill our boring winter weekends but quickly manifested into something everyone was asking us about. ABC dates can look different for everyone. For us, ABC dates are local restaurants and activities that start with a letter of the alphabet. You don’t have to have an activity and a meal, you can just do one. ABC dates are truly whatever works for you! Below you will find a list of ABC dates we’ve done. Feel free to use the same date (especially if you’re local) or change it up a bit to fit you and your partner’s likes. ABC dates are whatever you want them to be with no pressure or time constraint.

A: Axe Throwing & Applebee's

This one is pretty self-explanatory. We went axe throwing at Stumpy’s in Hershey, PA and had dinner at Applebee’s.

B: Brunch & Bookstore

We chose a cafe in State College, PA called, “Good Day Cafe” and then headed over to Barnes & Noble.

C: Coffee & Color-Me-Mine

We stopped at a local coffee shop called, “Stan’s Coffee Co” and then headed to our local pottery painting place called, “Stain.Paint.Create.”

D: Disney Dinner Date (Pick a Disney movie and then make themed food based on the movie!)

We chose A Bug’s Life and made dirt pudding dessert.

E: Edgar Allen Poe Speakeasy Show

This is very specific to our area as this was a traveling live poetry show. Other 'E' ideas include: escape room, exploring, or estate sale.

F: Food Crawl (Eat at different restaurants for drinks, appetizers, main course, and dessert.)

Drinks at Stonefly Café in Reedsville, PA. Appetizers at Sheetz. Main course at Bing’s Diner in Burnham, PA. Dessert at Dairy Queen.

G: Gambling

Casinos can be a lot of fun and you really don’t need that much money to spend the evening there as long as you’re playing smart. Hint: find the casinos/gambling parlors that have free drinks.

H: Hiking

We hiked the White Cliffs of Conoy in Lancaster County, PA.

I: Ice Cream Date

In this picture we’re eating rolled ice cream but don’t be fooled, ice cream dates are a recurring event for us!

J: Jim Thorpe Day

I love Jim Thorpe, PA and we’ve made day trips several times. This trip we went on the scenic train ride. (Jim Thorpe is specific to our area. Other 'J' ideas include: jigsaw puzzle, join a club, or junk food date.)

K: Kayaking

Kayaking is something we do often. This particular kayaking trip was on the Potomac River.

L: Lake Day & Lunch

We sunbathed, swam at Raystown Lake, then got lunch by the lake.

M: Mini Golf

We go mini golfing a lot but this was one of our first dates at Happy Valley Mini Golf in State College, PA.

N: Nature Walk

For this activity we chose one of our local hiking trails and found this picturesque scene.

O: Outdoor Festival

This is our local music & art festival. You can choose any outdoor festival, concert, or simply outdoor activity!

P: Pizza Making & Picnic on the Patio

This is another self-explanatory one. We made our own pizzas with our favorite toppings and had a picnic on our patio!

Q: Quiz Night

Our quiz (trivia) nights are spent at Wingman in Lewistown, PA.

R: Rent Redbox Movies

We ended up renting 3 movies, buying snacks, and making a whole day of watching movies you can’t find on streaming services!

S: Swimming & Snacks

Swim at your local pool, swim at your lake, swim at the ocean, whatever is local to you!

T: Theater Date (drama, movie, drive-in; whatever you want!)

We’re lucky enough to have a drive-in movie theater close by and went to see the new Twisters.

U: U-Pick Farm

We found an apple-picking farm in Elizabethtown, PA called Masonic Village Farm Market.

V: Vintage Shops & Villa Roma

Shopping at the Plaza Centre in Bellefonte, PA and ate dinner at Villa Roma in Lewistown, PA.

W: Winery Tour

Spent the day trying different wines from local wineries. These included Juniata Valley Winery, Hunter’s Valley Winery, and Buck’s Valley Winery.

X: eXplore a new city

By exploring Pittsburgh, PA, we found our ultimate taco stop, Candado Tacos!

Y: Yardsale Hopping

Yardsales are a frequent weekend activity for us. Check out Facebook and your local paper to see what yard sales are happening around you!

Z: Zoo Trip

Spent the day at the Pittsburgh Zoo. (Side note: we have a rule that every time we see a photobooth, we HAVE to get our pictures taken. I highly recommend because this gives you so many fun memories!)

That concludes our ABC dating list. We plan to continue finding other fun ways to create dating ideas for ourselves so I can share them with you! My partner and I have completed these activities over the course of 3 years but we have plenty of years of dating ahead of us. I hope that you and your partner choose to join us in creating your own ABC dates. I also want to encourage you to focus your ABC dates on your surrounding area by incorporating small businesses. The majority of our dates are local-based and support the many small businesses in our area.

I would love to hear your feedback of dates you want to try, dates you have tried, or your own ideas for ABC dates!
