A Walk in the Park

Boredom relieved

By Allen BanksPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

I had been sitting alone at the apartment all day waiting for my roommate, Paul to get home. He has the car and I hate walking by myself in this terribly large city. Last time I did it I was lost for hours, so here I wait. Hours and hours go by before I hear that familiar jiggle of keys in the lock. I got excited.

Paul entered the apartment and sat a large brown bag on the counter. He crossed the room and shut and locked the door. My heart sank as I figured he was in for the evening and since I could not drive I would be in for the night too.

Paul went for the bag and ruffled through it for a minute. He pulled out a bag of jerky and tossed me a few slices.

“Here ya go, Joe. I thought you would like this kind,” he smiled as I caught the jerky and made short work of it.

“Thanks,” I replied. Paul just shook his head.

Paul went to his room, again bringing up my shut in fears but a moment later he emerged with a tank top and shorts on and a frisbee. He asked if I wanted to go have some fun at the park.

Jumping off the couch I let him know how bored I was and I thanked him for getting me out of the house as I was bored out of my mind!

Paul retrieved the car keys and some odds and ends and opened the door to the apartment. He locked the door and we headed to the car.

The park was a ten minute ride. I spent my time looking out the window enjoying the sights and sounds of the city. Soon enough we arrived at the park. We found a location good for us and Paul retrieved the frisbee. We started out short distances and he would throw the frisbee and I would catch it and get it right back to him. We spread further and further apart and I missed the frisbee a few times but mostly I would catch it quickly and get it back to him. I was having a blast until Paul got tired. He stowed the frisbee and sat down under his favorite tree. He told me he did not feel like running today but told me to have fun. I told him to have a good rest and shouting a “see you later” at Paul, I took off on the jogging path.

I jogged for several minutes and was getting thirsty. I was having a drink of water when I looked up into the eyes of the prettiest girl I ever saw!

I politely asked her to join me for a run. She told me her name was Holly and after proper introductions, we took off. We ran around the park laughing at the pigeons we stirred up several times and had a great time. We curled up under a big tree and talked about our lives with one another. We did not delve deep as we had just met. We agreed that anytime we were in the park together that we would go for runs and talk until we knew each other better. I do think we have the potential for a fun relationship. Holly was so much fun. I could not wait to tell Paul about her.

Her roommate was calling her name when we got back from having another drink of water so I told her goodbye. It was a great day.

I felt better after some excersise and was walking slowly towards Paul’s favorite spot. Sure enough hunkered under a tree there he was reading a book.

He looked up and asked if I was hungry. I gave him an affirmative and against my wishes he put the leash on me and we went home.
