A Spark in the Shadows of Lae
Cathy never thought she’d find herself in this situation. Her back pressed against the wall just outside the restroom. Peter's breath was warm against her lips, his eyes dark with longing. The scent of alcohol lingered between them. She didn’t pull away. Instead, she closed her eyes and gave in!
It had started so innocently.
The Beginning
Cathy was a married woman, settled into the familiar rhythm of life with her husband, Richard. They had been together for eight years.
Then came Peter.
He was the new procurement officer, at Cathy’s workplace. He was sharp-minded and easygoing, with a deep laugh that made the office a little less dull. Cathy first noticed him at the office kitchen one morning, making jokes with the others as he poured coffee. She chuckled at something he said, and when their eyes met, something unspoken passed between them. Over the weeks, their interactions were casual. A lingering glance, a brush of hands when passing documents, there was no doubt a chemistry and attraction between Peter and Cathy. But they tried to keep it as professional as possible.
The Night That Changed Everything
One weekend, Peter and some male staff organised a party at Peter’s house. They invited other staff to join. Three other female staff were invited including Cathy. Cathy hesitated at first, but with two other female coworkers coming along, she convinced herself it was just another social gathering. They were promised to be dropped off after the party. At the party, the house was filled with laughter, music, and the scent of grilled lamb. All invited co workers gathered, drinking SP Lager and Red Label whisky, talking about everything. The drinks kept flowing.
Peter had been attentive, always making sure Cathy’s glass was full. She laughed more than usual, her body light with alcohol, her mind floating between the haze of tipsiness and awareness. Every time Peter looked at her, there was something in his gaze that made her stomach tighten. It was 11pm and getting late. Everyone was drunk and having a good time. Local music was played and everyone sang along to it.
At that time, Cathy stood up to go to the restroom, slightly unsteady. As she reached the hallway, Peter was already there and came out. They both stopped, surprised. Then he smiled, a lopsided grin that made her heart beat faster.
“You alright?” His voice was low. She smiled and nodded.
“Just a little dizzy.” She went in to use the restroom.
Peter stood outside and waited for her. When she came, Peter hesitated, but said, “You look beautiful tonight, Cathy.”
“You probably say that to all the ladies when you're drunk,” said Cathy.
“No,” he murmured, stepping a little closer. “There is something about you that is drawing me to you,” said Peter.
“I actually like you,” Peter admitted. His eyes never left hers.
It may be the words or the light head from beer, but Cathy was drawn into Peter that night. Peter, out of nowhere leaned in and kissed Cathy. She kissed him back before she could stop herself, her body betraying the life she had built. A noise from behind made them break apart. Someone was coming toward the restroom. Cathy gasped, stepping back. Peter looked at her, searching her face for regret. She found none. Before heading back to join the others, Peter pulled out his phone. He handed it to her without a word. She entered her number as they both walked back into the party area.
And just like that, the door to something new and dangerous had opened.
