A Right to Choose

A Daughter’s Dream and a Mother’s Courage

By SrijaPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

This is the story of a friend who showed me what it truly means to be brave — not just for herself, but for the kind of world she wants to create for others. Her story isn’t one filled with privilege or ease. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. But it is powerful, because in the face of every barrier, she chose to move forward — with grace, grit, and an unwavering belief in her right to choose.

She was born into a rural family where dreams, especially for girls, are often set aside before they are even spoken. In her community, there was no such thing as choosing your career path — especially not for a girl. You were simply expected to do what your elders said, follow the script written long before you were born, and accept it with obedience. Education for girls was often considered unnecessary beyond a certain point, and marriage was the default “next step” once you reached a certain age.

To make things harder, she lost her father when she was still a young child. There was no financial cushion to fall back on. Her mother, though willing to work, could only manage enough to meet their day-to-day needs. Most of the family expected her to get married once she came of age, viewing that as the only realistic and respectable path for a girl in their situation.

But her mother saw something different. Despite the overwhelming pressure from society and extended family, her mother believed her daughter deserved more — not just survival, but a future of her own choosing. She didn’t want her daughter to just exist in the mold others had made for her. She wanted her to thrive.

So, with immense courage, the two of them left their village behind. They moved to a different place — a city where her daughter could focus on her studies and carve out her own path. Her mother stood by her, shielding her from judgments, dismissive comments, and even family criticism. This wasn’t just support — it was a statement: My daughter has a right to choose her life.

Today, my friend is on the path to becoming a social worker. Her dream is not only to uplift herself and her mother, but to help others who come from similar backgrounds — people who are told they can’t, who are made to feel small because of where they come from or what their family can afford. She wants to work with women and children, to help them realize their rights, and to be the person her younger self would have needed during the hardest moments.

What moves me most is not just her ambition, but the deep empathy she has developed along the way. She knows what it feels like to be overlooked, unheard, and underestimated. And instead of letting that harden her, she’s using that understanding to become someone who uplifts others.

Her story reminds me — and hopefully anyone reading this — that the right to choose our path is not a luxury, it is a fundamental part of being human. No matter where we are born or how much money we have, we all deserve the chance to make our own decisions. And sometimes, that right must be fought for — not just by the person living the journey, but by those who love them.

For me, witnessing her and her mother’s journey has been life-changing. It made me reflect on the rights I often took for granted — my education, my decisions, my voice. And it also reminded me to be more courageous and empathetic toward myself and others. Because it’s not just about having rights — it’s about standing up for them, claiming them, and living them fully.

To my friend and her mother — thank you for showing what quiet courage looks like. You’ve reminded me that real change often starts with one person saying, “I deserve more.” And then taking that first step forward.
