A Long Welcome Back

Picking up where I left off…

By Ben ShelleyPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

I'm back. Okay, if truth be told then I have been back for a few weeks now but after a long holiday, it takes a while to settle back into the routine.

To go from relaxing and seeing as much as possible to the hustle and bustle of life once again. This is why it has taken me a while to write this entry as I have missed a few of the posts I had planned…

Best never to dwell on the past, focus on the future and what an exciting future it will be (hopefully).

The Honeymoon

The honeymoon seems now to be a lifetime ago…in reality, it was only a month ago but, as cliche as it sounds, time feels as though it has rapidly sped up from that point to today where I am sitting here typing this with only 87 days to go until Christmas.

Across the four and a half weeks that my wife and I travelled we went to Bulgaria, Malaysia and Indonesia, culminating in Australia for a few days to see the beautiful, quokkas.

My top five memories:

  1. Seeing the Quokkas on Rottnest Island on our anniversary.
  2. If you ever have the chance to see the amazing creatures, then I would recommend taking it as they are unafraid of humans, look adorable and you can get the most amazing selfie.

To have been able to see them on our anniversary on such a picturesque and beautiful beach was simply the icing on the cake. Having a picnic on the beach as the sun was shining and we travelled around by bike…it's enough to bring a smile to my face as I write this entry.

2. Seeing Fireflies at Kuala Selangor

This was unexpected. I had researched the tour beforehand and thought that the eagle feeding and the Blue Tears would be the highlight but no, seeing fireflies light up the surrounding bushes on the lake, before flying onto the boat and lighting up your hand was priceless. Amazingly gentle creatures that really lit up our evening.

3. Nusa Penida

The small island off of Bali was our first port of call when we landed and it did not disappoint, with crystal clear beaches and the best accommodation in Asia (that we stayed in), it was that stereotypical paradise that you do not want to leave. We also went snorkelling and saw the Teletubbies Hills.

If I have one regret from the Honeymoon it would be that we did not stay in Nusa Penida for longer…

4. The SeaLife Centre in Kuala Lumpor

Not the most adventurous but sometimes things in life are popular and 'typical' because they are amazing…I mean you would not go to Iceland and not look to seek out the Northern Lights.

The animals here seemed well cared for, there was a variety of them and our attention was maintained with the spectacle. The highlight of the visit for me was the Zebra Eel and that is saying something as they are not the typical animal that people visit a SeaLife centre for.

5. The Waterfalls of Bali

We saw a fair amount of waterfalls…getting pictures at each and whilst the water was incredibly cold, they are a natural wonder of the world for a reason and we spent hours just watching them, relaxing and getting lost in each other's company.

I could go listing amazing parts of the Honeymoon but the message is clear…it was an amazing trip and now I am back and focused on the future…

An Endearing Passion

I love writing and that is something that no one can take away from me…will I make it as a top writer in this world?

Most likely not but I want to attempt to write a book, continue meeting writers online and share my passion for the craft, seeing where it takes me. It may simply put a smile on my face at the end of the day and if that is how writing fits into my life, then I have no regrets.

I will however be changing up my schedule for a few months as I want to put my money where my mouth is and actually knuckle down and write a book. Something that I can't do with my current schedule.

What this means is that I may only post once a week for the foreseeable future here on Vocal but then again, I may post a couple of times, we will see how much time I have.

At the present point in time, I am writing on:

  • My blog
  • Medium
  • Here on Vocal
  • For SuperJump
  • and TealFeed.

I want to create an original, compelling copy from scratch and not copy and paste as much across the platforms. Why? It's nice to connect with different audiences who engage with different aspects of your interests.

It is great fun to have the chance to write as much as I do but I am getting older and my responsibilities will continue to increase. This is why I will be writing a little less and reading a lot more…as when I do turn around to focus on my online writing, I want to incorporate learnings from others.

A Final Thought

The Honeymoon was amazing. Once in a lifetime and the perfect cherry on the cake that was my wife and I's wedding. A moment in time that will be remembered for the different cultures and experiences with which we were able to engage, from the wildlife to the national dances and food. It is a memory that will always keep me smiling.

I feel lucky to have had the time off to go on Honeymoon when so many others are struggling and now I am back and once again focused on writing and writing a book of my own. I want to put my money where my mouth is, ticking this life goal off in the process and not looking back in regret.

I may end up writing a little less but that doesn't mean that I have disappeared…no. It means that I will be reading more, ticking off a life goal and keeping connected as best as I can.

It is great to be back and I look forward to catching up with all the writings that I have missed!
