By anabelle tabbyPublished about a year ago 4 min read

When I found myself in the heart of Xinjiang, standing amidst the most enchanting forest I had ever seen, I finally understood what it meant to experience something truly magical. This wasn’t just a beautiful destination—it was the dream I had been searching for. Only a live photo could capture the overwhelming joy and wonder I felt in that moment.

Sharing the breathtaking beauty of Xinjiang is a must, and I want you to experience its charm through my curated 7-day itinerary. If you’ve been longing for the ultimate nature retreat but have limited time, this condensed plan is perfect for discovering the essence of Xinjiang.

Why Xinjiang?

Xinjiang is a place where pristine snow-capped mountains meet lush grasslands and serene lakes. Every corner feels untouched and surreal, making it an ideal escape for nature lovers. While my previous 12-day journey allowed me to explore more remote areas like Xia Ta, Duku Highway, Kanas-Jun, and Zhaosu Huo City, this 7-day itinerary focuses on the must-visit highlights, perfect for those with a tighter schedule.

Here’s how you can make the most of a week in Xinjiang:

7-Day Simplified Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Yining

Your journey begins in Yining, the gateway to Xinjiang’s wonders. After arriving, take the evening to settle in and prepare for the adventures ahead. The city’s peaceful atmosphere is the perfect prelude to the scenic splendors waiting for you.

Day 2: Yining → Sailimu Lake (2.5 hours)

Wake up early and set off for Sailimu Lake, one of Xinjiang’s most iconic destinations. Known as the “last tear of the Atlantic,” this alpine lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and rolling meadows.

Tips: Stay overnight near the lake to witness the ethereal sunrise reflecting on its glassy waters.

Must-Do: Take a walk along the lakeshore and capture the ever-changing hues of the water.

Day 3: Sailimu Lake → Gongliu (2.5 hours) → Chaxi (1.5 hours)

From the serene waters of Sailimu, journey to the hidden gem of Chaxi Valley. Along the way, pass through Gongliu County, a charming stopover perfect for a quick rest.

Accommodation: Spend the night in Gongliu, which offers more comfortable options compared to remote Chaxi.

Activities: Explore the valley, dotted with wildflowers and framed by dramatic cliffs, a photographer’s paradise.

Day 4: Gongliu → Nalati Grassland (3 hours)

Nalati is where you’ll witness one of the most beautiful grasslands in China. The expansive fields seem to stretch endlessly, merging with the distant mountains under a bright azure sky.

Must-See: Watch the golden light of sunset paint the grasslands, creating a mesmerizing contrast with the shadows of the mountains.

Stay: Overnight in Nalati town, where guesthouses offer a rustic yet cozy experience.

Day 5: Nalati → Qiongkushitai (2.5 hours)

Venture to Qiongkushitai Village, often called the “Switzerland of Xinjiang.” This quaint mountain village is a true escape from modern life, offering breathtaking views of snow-dusted peaks and traditional wooden homes.

Activities: Take leisurely walks through the village, interact with friendly locals, and soak in the unspoiled beauty of your surroundings.

Stay: Spend the night in the village for an authentic experience of Xinjiang’s rural charm.

Day 6: Qiongkushitai → Gongliu (3 hours)

After a hearty breakfast, drive back to Gongliu. Use this day to relax and reflect on your journey so far. If time permits, explore Gongliu’s local markets or enjoy a quiet evening stroll.

Day 7: Gongliu → Fairy Lake (2 hours) → Yining (2.5 hours)

On your final day, visit Fairy Lake, a hidden treasure surrounded by lush hills and tranquil waters. While the accommodations near the lake may not be ideal, the beauty of this spot more than makes up for it. Afterward, return to Yining for the night.

Pro Tip: Stay in Yining city for better lodging options and catch a flight home the next morning.

Essential Tips for Foreign Travelers

Transportation:

Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore Xinjiang, especially for remote areas. Be sure to have your international driving permit and GPS navigation ready.

Language:

English is not widely spoken, so downloading a translation app or learning a few Mandarin phrases will be incredibly helpful.

Currency:

Carry enough Chinese Yuan (CNY) in cash for rural areas, as card payments may not be accepted in remote locations.

Weather:

Xinjiang’s weather can be unpredictable. Bring layers, including a warm jacket, to stay comfortable. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses, as the high-altitude sun can be intense.

Cultural Respect:

Xinjiang has a rich and diverse culture. Dress modestly, especially when visiting local villages, and always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Why You Should Visit

Xinjiang isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave. Whether it’s the serenity of Sailimu Lake, the charm of Qiongkushitai Village, or the endless grasslands of Nalati, each moment feels like a scene from a dream.

So pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to discover the breathtaking beauty of Xinjiang. You might just find your own dream forest, as I did!
