If you’ve ever thought about trading in your ordinary human boyfriend for that super hot and sexy vampire that you’re sure lives in the house down your street, you know, the one with the blacked out windows where no one is ever seen going in or out until dusk (except for their human servant), here’s all the reasons you need:

1. They’re super hot and sexy.

2. They rarely kill people for blood.

The vampire has come a long way from the ugly, evil monster with claw like fingernails, permanently extended fangs, and bald head of F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu or Stoker’s scheming, cruel and contemptuous Dracula. The modern vampire is super handsome, incredibly romantic and possesses a conscience that forbids him to kill for blood, though eating animals as an alternative isn’t ideal. In my opinion, he should be animal friendly and even eco-friendly whilst still fulfilling the ‘bad boy’ fantasy.

3. They often live in the oldest, most beautiful house in the area or drive the flashiest car, own their own private plane or boat (or entire island) and have invested their money wisely over the years.

4. They are completely devoted to their one true love (you) often claiming they’ve never loved anyone else in all their hundreds of years of unnatural life (well, never like this anyway). And they will spurn all advances from other women.

Despite the seemingly inappropriate age difference between the vampire and his human girlfriend, his visible age, usually only a couple of years older than the female protagonist, renders that age difference obsolete. Instead of focussing on how old he really is, think of all that knowledge he has about the past as his specialist subject. He may well have been to university anyway, sometimes more than once, so you can consider him well educated and bookish (another plus).

5. They exhibit old fashioned gentlemanly ways.

Whilst all men can be capable of the same gentlemanly characteristics as their vampiric counterparts, including protecting and shadowing their girlfriends, modern culture and peer pressure would consider these traits out of place and undesirable. We associate these behaviours with controlling and misogynistic attitudes in today’s society. Whereas the vampire who behaves in this manner is perceived to be a gentleman rather than a sexist, stalker or stifling boyfriend.

In my forthcoming novel, Persephone Reborn, Nathan quickly adapts to modern dating by learning that Cora isn’t a helpless female, as a woman from his own Georgian era might have been. She can carry her own rucksack of equipment even if it is heavy, but she appreciates his gentlemanly behaviour in other respects. His bowing to her, kissing her hand, holding the door for her, carrying her home, fighting for her and protecting her from harm, until she no longer wants, or thinks she no longer wants that from him, delights her. He plays the violin to soothe, calm and help her sleep and ultimately he would sacrifice himself for her, literally walking into hell (Hades) to bring her back to the world above.

6. They’re sooooo romantic – moonlit picnics, walks in the park, skinny dipping at midnight.

The vampire boyfriend is always giving rather than taking. He is constantly thinking of ways to show his love and devotion to his human girlfriend. Nathan woos Cora by showing her the places of the city most people never get to see, allowing her to experience eras of history in a way that museums and books cannot live up to, and taking the time to ensure her needs and desires are fulfilled rather than his own.

7. Impeccable fashion sense.

Who wouldn’t fall for a guy who rocks a frock coat and embroidered waistcoat, but looks equally good in a pair of tight jeans and t-shirt?

8. Super protective – will leap to your defence in a heartbeat (if they have one).

Whilst always gentle and loving with his girlfriend, the vampire is always ready to perform acts of quite terrifying violence when called upon to protect his mortal love.

9. Their extensive ‘life’ experience makes them the obvious go to person for help and advice. They will also encourage you to follow your dreams.

10. They are gentle and considerate and knowledgeable lovers, despite never having been in love with anyone else ;) They are confident enough to take charge but not in a forceful way. Far from acting like other teens or young adults, the vampire has a lifetime and more of experience, both sexually and mentally. He may look like a boy, but he is all man.

11. Did I mention they’re super hot and sexy?
