10 Habits Ghostwriters Need to Adopt for Massive Success in 2023
Or in any year, for that matter

2022 has already been a good year for me as a writer.
But 2023 will be an even bigger year, and I know this to be true because I focused on a few set things this past year. Actually, twelve of them. A dozen things pushed me to my best year yet as a ghostwriter.
As a ghostwriter, success is determined by the habits you create and maintain.
We all know it's essential to stay focused and continue learning, but what exactly does that look like? What specific habits will make a difference in your career as a ghostwriter?
Here are twelve habits that you should adopt to achieve success in 2023.
Start Each Day with an Empowered Marketing Mindset
You don't need to be a writer to grasp this concept.
But for sure, as a ghostwriter, you must set yourself up for success each day. That means having an empowered mindset when marketing yourself and your services. Set aside time each morning to review your goals and remind yourself why you love being a ghostwriter.
This will help you focus on the bigger picture of where you want to go (and why) and motivate you throughout the day.
Schedule Your Day Like a Business Owner
As a ghostwriter, you must treat your career like any other business owner.
Time management is vital in any business, especially when it comes to being successful with a pen. Take the time every morning or evening (depending on when works best for you) to plan out your day - what tasks do you need to complete today? When will those tasks be completed? And beyond tasks, make sure you're keeping track of all the other things that go into running a business.
Things like invoicing, managing contractors, and taking time for yourself.
This structure helps keep you on track throughout the day. It helps prevent procrastination by giving each task its timeframe and priority rating.
Check Your Performance and Tweak What Isn't Working
One of the most important aspects of running any business is tracking performance data - successes and failures - so that progress can be made over time.
The same goes for being a successful ghostwriter. Keep track of how well specific strategies work for getting clients, what type of work gets rewarded with repeat customers, etc., so you can tweak things if something isn't working as expected.
And remember this all-important phrase that applies to any kind of business: if you can't measure it, you can't manage it.
Get in the Habit of Networking with Others Strategically
Networking is essential for any freelancer or small business owner, but especially for ghostwriters who often rely on referrals from others who have worked with them before or have heard good things about their services from other sources.
Make sure that networking is part of your daily routine; reach out regularly (but not too often!) to potential clients or colleagues who could benefit from your services or provide valuable advice/feedback/mentorship along your journey as a ghostwriter.
Think about this truism: your network is your net worth.
Be Humble Enough to Ask for Help and Feedback
It is crucial for ghostwriters to be bold and ask for help when they need it.
Feedback from others can be invaluable for improving or staying ahead of trends in their field. Never allow yourself to get to the point when you feel you're above your fellow writers.
Set Up Systems and Templates for Repeat Tasks in Your Business
To ensure efficiency within their business, ghostwriters should set up systems and templates for repetitive tasks such as client onboarding or invoicing.
This will save time and energy, which could be better spent elsewhere within their business operations. While these are mundane tasks, they are important to keep your boat afloat.
Check in on the Pulse of Your Niche
Keeping up with industry trends is essential if one wishes to remain relevant in 2023 as a ghostwriter.
Awareness of new technology or changes within the industry allows writers to stay ahead of the curve instead of behind it. Plus, it could even provide you with new ideas for projects and ways to market yourself as a writer!
This can be achieved by reading industry news sites, attending events or webinars, or following influencers and leaders in their field.
Push Back Against Self Doubt By Being Proactive
Self-doubt can be debilitating if left unchecked; however, writers must learn to push back against self-doubt by being proactive rather than reactive.
Self-doubt happens to writers when they are not producing enough work or when their work is not well received.
To combat this, writers should set realistic goals and be proactive in creating strategies and processes to help them reach them on time. They should also take the time to reflect on what projects did well so that they can replicate those successes in the future.
By taking control of what they can do, rather than letting self-doubt take over, writers can stay on track and progress as ghostwriters.
Be Capable of Adapting to Change without Panicking
Change is inevitable, so learning to adapt without panicking is vital if one wishes to remain successful as a writer.
The fact is, you've already made it through the pandemic in 2020, which was a massive challenge for many of us, so with the right tools and strategies in place, you too can remain flexible and ride out any storms that may come your way.
Make sure to take the time to stay on top of current trends in your niche market, pay attention to analytics, research successful ghostwriting strategies from other writers, and always be willing to learn something new.
Celebrate Your Wins as Much as You Focused on Failure in the Past
It is essential for writers not to dwell too much on failure but instead focus on celebrating big and small successes.
Sometimes you may be your own biggest cheerleader, and that's ok. The point is to take a breath and celebrate the wins to stay motivated and energized.
Whether it's completing a project, winning an award or simply getting a positive review from a client—it all counts!
The final word
These ten habits should help set aspiring or experienced ghostwriters up for success in 2023—and beyond.
But remember, these are just guidelines—ultimately, it's up to each writer to decide which habits are most important for their personal career goals and objectives. Once you figure out which ones work best for your own hustle, stick with them. With consistent effort (and self-love!), anything is possible.
Good luck!
