“Witches’ Waters”
An old wives’ tale rhyme…

On the edge of town there is an old abandoned lake.
At the end of a dark road that others seldom take.
A gloomy lake and looking at it leaves you ill at ease.
With a rocky shoreline full of fallen and dead trees.
It is the lake the witches use to do what their mothers taught em’.
It’s always cold and has a smell and you can not see the bottom.
So many things have happened there mothers always warn their daughters.
NEVER to be caught alone at night at Witches’ Waters.
On a lovely night the water does sparkle and glisten.
Some who dare go forget the warnings and don’t always listen.
They proudly brag and say they’ve been before and nothings happened yet.
Each time one taunts the lake they learn a lesson they won’t soon forget.
The moonlight on the water looks like the search flashlights beaming.
The birds that call from tree to tree sound like the lost victims screaming.
The red dirt at the lake’s bottom keeps the water full of mud.
At first glance when one looks at it, it appears to be blood.
It is a place about which all mothers have warned their daughters.
They have all been warned to never drink from the lake called “Witches’ Waters”.
One girl didn’t listen and she thought the curse was fake.
She took a dare from so-called friends and STILL went to the lake.
She wanted to join their little club so she went alone up the trail.
It was part of an initiation rite that they said she couldn’t fail.
She had to go and sip the water and they’d see if she came back.
They never expected to become the victims of supernatural attack.
Some said if a girl drank it and lived she’d have an easy life.
The ones they knew who had all became some rich man’s wife!
She ran up the trail with an attitude as quickly as she please.
Until she fell down on her face and got two bloodied knees.
That made her stop and hear a rustling in a a nearby bush.
It wasn’t a rock she’d stumbled on it felt just like a push.
They waited that night for an hour expecting for her to come back.
Then heard a scream from by the lake that literally made the windshield crack.
They all fled and left her there they were all too scared to say.
She was left there overnight until others asked about her the next day.
Unlike the promise of becoming a rich wife like she’d been told.
Instead of still looking young she had become suddenly old.
They said to drink the water with eyes closed and without peeking.
Apparently she looked and now had seen her reflection and was shrieking!
They couldn’t explain the phenomenon and didn’t know what to say.
All they could do was get an ambulance that came and took her away.
That is just one story of the lake called “Witches’ Waters”…
As a sacrifice it’s where they take the first cow the farmhouse slaughters.
As part of the curse it’s a sacrifice which the townspeople say…
That throwing in that first cow keeps ALL the evil spirits away.
If not they say the events at that lake will become worse.
It is the only way they know how to control the “Witches’ Waters” curse.
So many have gone for a sip to prove they have no fear.
All meet tragic ends or they just simply disappear.
They never find them searching although they look both day and night.
They never know if they didn’t follow the rules or did everything right.
Drinking from “Witches’ Waters” is a risk you do not take.
Many lives have been ruined or souls completely lost drinking from that accursed lake.
