In 2155, humanity established the Prometheus Research Lab beneath the thick atmosphere of Venus, buried deep within a plateau that somehow resisted the planet’s extreme heat and pressure. The lab’s mission was to study Venus’ clouds for microbial life and potential energy sources.

The crew of eight consisted of climatologists, engineers, and xenobiologists. Among them was Dr. Aisha Malik, a geochemist fascinated by Venus’ sulfuric atmosphere and its potential for harboring extremophile life.

For weeks, the team worked in isolation, drilling through the plateau and taking samples of the clouds. Then they began receiving anomalous readings: vast energy pulses emanating from a cavern deep beneath the lab. At first, the signals were dismissed as seismic interference, but soon the pulses formed a rhythmic pattern—almost like a heartbeat.

Dr. Malik convinced the team to investigate the source. They descended into the cavern via pressurized tunnels, encountering walls coated with a black crystalline material that seemed to shimmer under their lights. Instruments malfunctioned, compasses spun wildly, and communications with the surface became erratic.

As they progressed, the crew began to experience hallucinations. Shadows appeared where none should be. They heard whispers in languages they had never learned, calling their names, speaking of sins they had committed and fears they had long buried. Sleep became impossible; dreams were invaded by visions of monstrous beings lurking in the acidic clouds above.

In the deepest chamber, they found the source: a massive, organic-like structure embedded in the rock. Its surface pulsed with an unearthly glow, and its shape constantly shifted—like liquid metal and living tissue fused together. Dr. Malik attempted to sample it, but the structure reacted, extending tendril-like projections that brushed against her mind, filling it with memories of alien worlds and cosmic voids.

Crew members began disappearing one by one. Some were found in the tunnels, eyes vacant, muttering in alien tongues. Others vanished without trace, leaving only shadows behind. The lab’s AI system, Hera, started speaking independently, warning the survivors of a “hunger” beneath Venus that “feeds on thought and fear.”

Dr. Malik realized the lab had awakened a consciousness older than Venus itself—an entity that had slept beneath the surface for eons. Every interaction fed it, and every human mind brought it closer to fully awakening.

In a desperate attempt to contain the terror, Malik set explosives to collapse the cavern. As the countdown began, she transmitted a final message to Earth:

“Prometheus Lab is lost. The entity beneath Venus is alive. It sees everything, hears everything, and waits for more. If you receive this… do not come. Turn back before it consumes you.”

The explosion sealed the cavern, but telemetry indicated the black structure was already extending beyond the rocks, its pulse continuing beneath Venus’ crust.

Prometheus Research Lab was officially declared destroyed by pressure collapse. But orbital sensors detect faint, rhythmic energy pulses emanating from the plateau to this day—like a heartbeat echoing across the planet.

Venus remains beautiful, clouded in yellow mist and sulfuric storms. But beneath the surface, something ancient and hungry waits silently, ready to reach out again when curiosity awakens it.
