This person does not exist

Talking philosophy with a friend last night and she showed me this website where photos of non-existent people are created via artificial intelligence. The faces look so real; check it out here www.thispersondoesnotexist.com

Things have been creeping me out a bit ever since and I'm starting to feel kind of weird about it lol - hoping someone here can help.

So we were talking about consciousness and how objects and ideas created in our minds might actually have their own plane of existence - a metaverse, or maybe a collective subconscious that is beyond the reach of physics etc etc... and then she said “what about these people then?” and showed me the site.

Here’s one. Cool eh?

I can see what she's getting at, it would be reasonable to assume this person exists somewhere, right? But he doesn’t. He’s a mimic, a bit of code, just pure information. But he looks real, right? Here’s another one.

She said “so if ideas have their own existence, do these people actually exist somewhere now that we’ve seen them and thought about them?” and I fucking love that idea. Well I did at first, anyway.

The website makes a new image - a new person - every time you refresh your browser and we had already looked at dozens. These bits of code, these ideas, these people coming to life somewhere in the metaverse... only to be refreshed out of existence a few seconds later.

Had all of these people actually existed somewhere, on some plane? Are we some kind of supernatural dictators, sparking and ending existences with a tap on a screen? Did I create, then destroy, this girl??
