The village hidden in the lake.
A unique vision into the perspective from the other side.
A large manufactured lake on the outskirts of a metropolitan cityscape buried most of the original portion of town that isolated a part of town in its center. Surrounded by a large electric fence, the inhabitants cannot leave. Within these confines exists a cannibalistic tribe. Every week, food is delivered to this town as a tribute to keep them at peace. In this place, an adult female with golden hair exists. As far as she remembered, this place was their home. She would go to the fence and stair out, wondering what laid beyond those dangerous walls before her. All that could be seen was water all around the island. The girl always went to the village elder to inquire about the outside world.
"The outside is extremely dangerous for both sides. We have a good thing going on here in the village." The elder spoke.
"It is always the same thing every time I ask. All I see out there is water! How dangerous can water be?" The girl exclaimed.
"Oh Lilly, the world is a darker place than it seems." The elder tried to calm the child.
Lilly didn't understand what the elder meant about the world. In her observations, the world existed only of their little village, the endless water around the land, and the mysterious box of food that appears every week.
2 moons pass for this village, and it was the day another tribute would arrive. A small group of mercenaries hides near the fence awaiting the delivery. It was not long before the delivery would arrive by boat to deliver the boxes. A group of soldiers escorting the delivery crew to remove the remnants of the old crate to replace with another opened the gate. In all the commotion, the men sneak into the area and hide, waiting for the people to leave.
The soldiers and crew get onto the boat and made haste back to land and away from this island. The men spring into action to break open the crate; within were multiple people trapped within one of which were their target, the mercenary leader sent out along with the other prisoners on death row to be executed as a tribute to the village.
Before the leader could praise their effort, the reason for the soldiers' expedited efforts to leave was made clear. The horde of villagers began to emerge slowly from a distance. The elder was at the lead of the village horde, followed by Lilly to pick up the crate's contents. However, they would meet with resistance today as the mercenaries began to show Lilly why the elder spoke of the darker world. Many rounds fired into the mass, one of which struck the elder and killed him. Lilly witnessing this, let out a large shrill. Unknown to her, she was a special breed, and her shrill was loud like a siren, drawing an enormous horde. In anger, she ran towards the mercenaries, still stunned by the strong shockwave from her sonic boom level shrill as more villagers swarm out to attack the group.
After half an hour, Lilly stood there with most of her village looking about. All that was left was the mass of villagers lost and the food before them. Some who were killed came back to life. The village devoured their prey after capture that it never dawned on them that those who were not dispatched quickly will reanimate from the dead to become one of them.
Lilly came up with an idea to seek vengeance on the dark world that the elder spoke of, but it would take her and the village a stint to make this happen. First, the village will spare a few to recruit them to their army for every tribute that arrives. Secondly, Lilly needed to find a way for them to enact vengeance.
Many winters pass, and that opportunity came to fruition. The winter chill was harsh this particular year. It was severe enough to freeze the waters around the island and damage the generators that powered the fences. Lilly watched as a bird fly by the fence and did not get hurt. In a small reckless act, she tried to touch the fence and was not hurt. This was it; the day had come. She let out her shrill to summon the army and toppled the fence.
It was New Year's eve, and a foggy haze covered the frozen lake. A silhouette of a person could be seen in the distance. A few people from a lake house gaze out to see Lilly heading towards them at a quick pace before a multitude of other silhouettes appear behind her like a large-scale army. The party-goers run away in fear, with a few villagers in the chase. The radio played audio from the party in the town square of the countdown.
Welcome to the Year of the Zombies.
