The Silent Watchers

Once They See You, There's No Escape.

By Jason “Jay” BenskinPublished about a year ago 3 min read

On a frigid night, Sky called. Dr. Sen, shaken from his thoughts, received the dreaded message. The villagers of a small settlement, nestled near a dense forest, had reported bizarre occurrences—women vanishing for days, eerie sounds emanating from the woods, and an overwhelming fear gripping the land. Most disturbing were the claims that villagers felt watched, even within the supposed safety of their locked homes. They could only escape the sensation when their doors were tightly shut, but even then, the feeling lingered.

The journey to the village took longer than expected. Thick fog swirled over the narrow road, blanketing the world in an opaque veil and swallowing the headlights. Dr. Sen's nerves were already frayed by the unsettling descriptions he'd heard, but the eerie quiet and isolation of the forest heightened his unease. When he finally arrived, night had fallen completely. The once-bustling village was eerily silent, its energy drained. Every window was tightly covered, every door bolted shut, as though the buildings themselves were hiding from something unseen.

The atmosphere was suffocating, as though life itself had fled, leaving behind only an empty, waiting void.

Dr. Sen was greeted by Mr. Patel, a retired teacher who served as the village head. His face was composed, but his eyes betrayed a breaking point of barely-contained fear.

“Please, help us,” Mr. Patel begged, his voice trembling as he led Dr. Sen to the small district office. “They look upon us… they never leave us. They never leave any of us.”

Inside, a few villagers were already gathered. They sat in stiff, fearful silence, like animals cornered with nowhere to run. Their bodies trembled with a nervous energy they couldn’t shake, their pale faces drawn with terror. Their eyes, rimmed with dark circles, stared blankly ahead, too exhausted to express the full extent of their horror. It was clear that sleep had long eluded them, and fear had taken its place. The room reeked of desperation.

Dr. Sen felt the oppressive weight of the situation settle on his shoulders. He spoke, breaking the uneasy silence. “I’ve heard a lot about what’s been happening here—strange sightings, disappearances, and this… feeling of being watched. But I need to understand more. Please, tell me everything.”

A young woman named Molly hesitated, her hand trembling as she raised it. Her voice cracked when she finally spoke. “It’s not just the ones who disappear… it’s the ones who come back.”

The words sent a chill through the room.

“My sister vanished three nights ago,” Molly continued, her voice barely above a whisper. “We searched for her, but there was nothing. No trace. Then, last night, she came home… but she’s not the same. She just stands in the corner, watching me. Her eyes are empty. She doesn’t blink, doesn’t speak. She just watches.”

The silence that followed was suffocating. The terror in the room was palpable, like a living thing pressing in from all sides. Dr. Sen’s heart pounded as he realized the true depth of the horror these villagers were living with.

It wasn’t just fear of the unknown. It was the certainty that something terrible had taken root here, something that twisted reality and blurred the line between life and death.

“We need to find out what’s really going on,” Dr. Sen said, his voice steady though his hands trembled slightly. He could feel the weight of unseen eyes on him now, too. As the night stretched on, he knew the villagers weren’t alone in their terror.

Because now, even he felt it—the watching.
