The Relic

A Short Story by Audrey Rose

By Audrey RosePublished about a year ago 3 min read

Dusty shelves, filled with forgotten relics and strange trinkets, lined the narrow aisles. Jake had always loved exploring places like this, discovering hidden treasures among the debris of the past.

He wandered aimlessly, his fingers brushing over old books, chipped teacups, and faded photographs. But then, something caught his eye—a peculiar relic tucked away in a dark corner. It was an eerie, stone carving of a man with hollow eyes and a disturbing grin. The craftsmanship was both mesmerizing and unsettling.

Jake couldn't explain why, but he felt an irresistible pull towards the relic. It appeared to lure him in, whispering taunting vows of enigma and peril. Without thinking twice, he bought it, the old shopkeeper giving him a knowing, yet unreadable, look as he handed over the cash.

That night, as Jake placed the relic on his desk, he felt a strange sense of unease. The figure's hollow eyes seemed to follow him, its twisted grin growing more sinister in the dim light of his bedroom. He tried to shake off the feeling, attributing it to his overactive imagination. Yet, the sensation lingered, a persistent whisper at the edge of his consciousness.

He turned away from the relic, determined to focus on his studies, but the unease gnawed at him. The pages of his textbook blurred, the words refusing to stay in place as if the relic's presence had somehow disrupted reality itself.

Jake decided he needed a distraction. He grabbed his phone and texted his best friend, Emma, hoping a conversation with her would ground him. They had always shared a mutual interest in archaeology and ancient artifacts, so he knew she would be intrigued by his latest find.

"Hey, Em. Found something really weird today. Wanna come over and check it out?"

A few minutes later, his phone buzzed with her enthusiastic reply. "On my way! Can't wait to see it!"

Jake let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. He glanced back at the relic, its eerie gaze still fixed on him. He couldn't help but wonder about its origins and the secrets it held.

As Emma arrived, her excitement palpable, Jake felt a momentary relief wash over him. She always had a way of making things seem less daunting. They settled in his room, and Emma's eyes immediately fell on the relic.

"Wow, Jake. This is... incredible," she said, her voice tinged with awe. "Where did you find it?"

"In an old antique shop downtown," Jake replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "The shopkeeper didn't know much about it, but something about it just drew me in. Now, I can't shake this weird feeling."

Emma stepped closer to the relic, examining it carefully. "It looks ancient. The carvings are so intricate. Have you done any research on it yet?"

Jake shook his head. "Not really. I tried, but I couldn't concentrate. It's like it has some kind of... presence."

Emma nodded thoughtfully. "Let's see what we can find out together. Maybe there's something online or in one of our archaeology books."

They spent the next few hours poring over texts and scouring the internet, piecing together bits of information. The relic appeared to be from an ancient, long-forgotten civilization, one shrouded in mystery and legends. There were tales of artifacts imbued with powers, both wondrous and dangerous, that had been lost to time.

As they delved deeper, Jake noticed that the room seemed to grow colder, the air heavier. Emma, too, began to feel the relic's unsettling aura. Yet, their curiosity only intensified.

Suddenly, a low hum filled the room, and the relic began to glow faintly. Both Jake and Emma froze, their eyes widening in disbelief. The hum grew louder, resonating through their very bones.

"Jake, what's happening?" Emma's voice trembled.

"I... I don't know," he stammered. "Maybe we should put it back."

But before they could move, the glow intensified, engulfing the room in a blinding light. They shielded their eyes, and when the light faded, they felt an overwhelming sense of dread. Jake glanced at the relic, its eyes now glowing a faint, eerie red. He tried to move, but his body was paralyzed. He felt an icy grip on his mind, a presence invading his thoughts.

"You’re mine,” a voice hissed inside his head. It was the voice of the entity within the relic, a malevolent spirit seeking a vessel. Jake tried to resist, but his will was no match for the dark force. The once lively boy was now a mere shell, his eyes void of any emotion, his mouth twisted into the same sinister grin as the relic.
