The Rain That Brought Johnny

A mysterious boy, a stormy night, and a secret that changed Cassie’s life forever.

By Fawad AhmadPublished about 6 hours ago 4 min read

Cassie had always believed that her life would remain simple and predictable. She lived in the quiet little town of Greendale where nothing unusual ever happened. Every morning she walked to school, every afternoon she worked at the small bookstore on Maple Street, and every evening she sat beside the fireplace reading novels.

To Cassie, the world felt safe and ordinary.

But everything changed on one rainy evening.

The sky had turned dark much earlier than usual, and heavy rain poured down the streets of Greendale. Cassie had just closed the bookstore when the storm suddenly grew stronger. Thunder echoed across the town, and lightning lit the sky for a split second.

She pulled her jacket tighter and started running through the empty street.

The rain quickly soaked her hair and clothes. She looked around desperately for a place to hide from the storm.

Then she saw the narrow alley behind her favorite café.

Cassie rushed inside the alley to escape the rain.

But the moment she turned the corner, she bumped into someone.

Hard.

“Hey!” a voice said.

Cassie stepped back, surprised.

Standing in front of her was a boy about her age. His dark hair was completely wet, sticking to his forehead, and his clothes looked like he had been walking in the rain for hours. But what caught Cassie’s attention the most were his eyes.

They looked tired.

Almost… scared.

“I’m sorry,” Cassie said quickly. “I didn’t see you.”

The boy gave a small nod.

“It’s okay.”

For a moment, they both stood there silently while the rain kept pouring outside the alley.

Cassie studied him carefully.

She had lived in Greendale her whole life, and she knew almost everyone in town. But she had never seen this boy before.

“You’re not from here, are you?” she asked.

The boy hesitated before answering.

“No.”

Cassie tilted her head slightly.

“So what are you doing in Greendale… in the middle of a storm?”

The boy looked away, as if searching for the right words.

“My name is Johnny,” he finally said.

Cassie smiled politely.

“I’m Cassie.”

Another flash of lightning lit the alley for a second. In that brief moment, Cassie noticed something strange.

Johnny had a small cut on his arm.

And it looked fresh.

“Hey… you’re hurt,” Cassie said.

Johnny quickly pulled his sleeve down.

“It’s nothing.”

But Cassie could tell he was lying.

“You should clean it,” she said. “The bookstore where I work isn’t far. We have a first aid kit.”

Johnny looked uncertain.

As if he didn’t trust anyone.

But the thunder roared again, and the rain kept falling harder.

Finally, he nodded.

“Okay.”

They ran through the rain together until they reached the bookstore.

Cassie unlocked the door and quickly turned on the lights.

The warm yellow glow filled the small shop, making it feel safe and cozy.

Johnny stepped inside slowly, looking around at the shelves filled with books.

“It smells like old paper,” he said quietly.

Cassie laughed.

“That’s the best smell in the world.”

She grabbed the first aid kit and helped clean the small cut on his arm.

While she worked, she noticed Johnny kept glancing at the window, like he was worried someone might be watching.

“You seem nervous,” Cassie said.

Johnny didn’t respond.

Instead, he asked a strange question.

“Do you believe in coincidences?”

Cassie frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Johnny looked at her seriously.

“Do you believe that people meet for a reason?”

Cassie thought for a moment.

“I guess… sometimes.”

Johnny leaned back in the chair.

“Good.”

Before Cassie could ask why, the lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire bookstore went dark.

The storm outside grew louder.

Cassie froze.

“That’s weird,” she whispered.

The power almost never went out in Greendale.

Then suddenly—

A loud knock echoed on the bookstore door.

Both of them jumped.

Cassie slowly walked toward the door.

But Johnny grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t open it,” he said urgently.

Cassie looked confused.

“Why?”

Johnny’s voice became tense.

“Because if they find me…”

He stopped speaking.

Another knock hit the door.

Louder this time.

Cassie’s heart began beating faster.

“Who’s ‘they’?” she asked.

Johnny looked toward the door with fear in his eyes.

“People who shouldn’t know I’m here.”

The knocking continued.

Cassie’s mind raced with questions.

Was Johnny in trouble?

Was someone chasing him?

Or was this something much worse?

Then a voice came from outside the door.

“Open up.”

Cassie had never heard that voice before.

It sounded cold.

Dangerous.

Johnny stepped back into the shadows of the bookstore.

“Please,” he whispered. “Don’t let them see me.”

Cassie looked at the door.

Then back at Johnny.

For the first time in her quiet and ordinary life, Cassie realized something important.

This night was not normal.

This boy was not ordinary.

And whatever secret Johnny was hiding…

It had just found its way into her life.

The knocking continued.

And Cassie had to decide.

Open the door…

Or protect the mysterious boy who had appeared in the rain.
