The Paranormal Experience

Collection of Paranormal Short Stories

By Katie Dawn Published 4 years ago 18 min read

Growing up I was always into mysteries. At the age of ten I read a story on using baby powder to communicate with the other side. Nothing happened when I gave it a try, other than my mom seeing an opportunity to try and scare me. Her plan backfired, I wasn’t scared I was intrigued! Which makes me wonder, did she really mess with it or did she try to cover it up? I accepted the fact that she had done it, I mean back then I didn’t really believe in ghosts like most kids did. At the age of twelve we moved into an older small house. Walking in I felt kinda uneasy but didn’t understand it so I brushed it off as nerves-of being in a new space. The first few weeks went by fine, some nights I’d have trouble falling asleep but nothing that was suspicious at the time. That soon changed, one night I was in bed and I turned my light off. I had a touch lamp on my bedside table. Soon as the room went dark I had this strong feeling overcome me. I sat up a bit trying to look around the room, there was a little light coming in through my window from a street light. As I scanned the room I saw flash images, of this old man holding a knife. He was coming towards me. I screamed, pulled the cover around me, too scared to turn my lamp on. My mom ran in and flipped the ceiling light on. I jumped up out of bed and ran right past her and into her room. The bedrooms were conjoined with a door between them. Dad was awake so I jumped in bed beside him crying. He asked me what happened and I told him. He didn’t tell me it was nothing, instead he told me I’d be ok. I laid in bed that night beside him and my mom for a few hours. Finally my dad woke me and told me to try to go back in my room. So I did, I walked in climbed in bed and left my door open hoping for comfort. As soon as I’m settled, it starts again this time he’s coming towards me. I scream for my mom as I’m backed up against my head board. She runs in and turns the light on again. He’s gone. I could feel the disconnect of fear leave my body. Mom turned the light off and slept in my bed beside me that night. It took me what felt like hours to fall asleep. The activity stopped, at least for that night. The next day dad talked to me about what had happened. I learned how he’s a seventh son, which is believed to have the ability to communicate with the dead. He explained that ghost are real. It was at that time that, he told me that anytime I felt uneasy to say ‘I command you to leave this space, in the name of Jesus Christ’. After our talk I started feeling a bit more relaxed. I lived there for eight years. In those eight years the activity went on and off. By the age of thirteen I’ve experienced enough that I started asking my dad to tell me his experiences. I’d listen to him for hours, and didn’t mind hearing them more than once. We started watching ‘TAPS’ together. I remember being woken up late one night on a school night to watch the episode where they investigated Waverly Hills Sanatorium. My interest for the paranormal was growing. I didn’t fear it as much as I did my first experience. I started understanding more from every bit activity that happened to me.

TINY HANDS

This old house had bedroom doors made out of that thin cheap wood. My room had two doors one leading to the living room and one connected to my parents room. The door to the living room had a large long mirror. I loved it because it came in handy for wardrobe check. It was an older mirror, it had rust like spots on some parts of the glass. When cleaning my room my mirror would get wiped down really good. One day I noticed a tiny set of handprints towards the bottom. I’m an only child and at the time didn’t have an kids that would’ve been in my room. The placement was accurate size for a baby that is freshly in the walking stage. The size of the prints were small like a babies as well. I wiped the mirror down with cleaner and gave it another look over. The handprints were gone. About a day later as I’m looking in the mirror I look down and the handprints are back. I didn’t get any bad feeling. Instead I kept picturing this little boy finding his reflection and being amazed. I wasn’t scared, I told myself that this baby is welcome. I went on to let it continue because I learned by then that not all hauntings are bad ones.

PRANKSTER

It was a normal summer day at my house. We always had company. My dads was big on the kids are meant to play and leave the adults alone. I was thirteen so I was ok with that. Their friends had a daughter who is a few years younger than me and I had a friend over. All three of us was sitting on my bed talking about normal preteen topics. We’re all distracted by a noise. Our attention goes straight to the closet door. The doorknob then starts shaking as if someone is trying to open it. Both of my friends look at me and I could see their fear. I assured them it was my mom. The door started shaking more. They jumped next to me. I got up walked over to the closet and was saying “it’s just my mom trying to scare us.” As I went to open the door. I was use to her scaring me and sometimes my friends were victims. I swung the door wide open. There’s no one there. I turn to look at my friends and they done ran out the door, leaving me by myself. I shut the door and went to the kitchen. My friends didn’t want to go back in there. We told the adults what happened. No one was surprised, most of them had been there before and had witnessed or heard something. Needless to say we ended up going outside instead.

THE AUDIENCE

We had company over as usual. In total there was five adults and two kids, that’s including myself. Me and my friend were in my room playing video games. We can hear the adults in the kitchen cutting up. We decided we wanted a snack. So we paused the game and headed to the kitchen. Using the door that connected to my parents room, we walked through to the door that led from their room to the kitchen. The adults were sitting around the table playing cards. We walk between the table and the sink. As we pass the sink, the water comes on full strength. Steam is rolling. Mom was sitting with her back turned to us, she turned around and saw me and my friend both looking shocked. She tells me to turn the water off. I scan the room, it’s clear the other adults facing us saw what had happened. We hadn’t touched the faucet. My dad looked at me and said he knew I didn’t touch it. The adults started talking about the incident. Me and my friend got our snack and went along the way. He was uneasy about it, talking about it when we got back to the room. Me being use to things happening, I just told him it was nothing to worry about.

SHADOW MAN

When I was 14 I decided I wanted to write a book. I sat at the computer typing away. At the time the computer was in my parents room next to the door that leads to the kitchen. My dad was a diabetic and wasn’t in the best shape. He was laying in his bed smoking a cigarette, taking to me while I type. Me and my dad were pretty close, we talked all the time. We’re in steady conversation when I see something out the corner of my eye. The door was wide open, which usually stayed open unless they were sleeping. Still talking I look over and see this shadow like person. It was a man, he was leaned up against the door frame looking at me. I couldn’t see any features other than it looked like he was wearing a cap. I stared back at him. My trance was broke when my dad hollered my name. He noticed I had quit talking and was staring. He asked me what I was doing. I looked back at my dad and back towards the door. The man was gone. I told my dad what I saw. He said he didn’t see it. He was facing the wall. It was weird. I didn’t feel uneasy, nothing made me think that it was malevolent. A few days later our landlord came over. He was friends with my parents and they got to talking. My dad brought up my experience and he looked surprised. The town I lived in was made up of all whites at one time, people of color were not treated right. He informed there was a black man that was shot off of a horse way back in the day. This had happened right in front of where our house now stands. It kind of gave me closure. I knew he was harmless and just here. I felt bad for him. I only saw him that one time. He never visited again, at least not to my knowing.

DOG PACK

My dad was in the hospital due to issues with his diabetes. It was getting late and me and mom were laying down. I laid with her in her room. We laid there talking and cutting up. After about ten minutes of laughing and chatting we are interrupted by a whining noise. We both went silent trying to focus on the sound. It sounded like a puppy crying like it had been hurt. We both jump up. We didn’t have any dogs. Mom goes out her door and to the back door. Our back door leads to this small covered back porch. She opens the outside door and looks around. I’m looking through the windows in her room. One looks to the back in the same direction of the back porch. The other shows the driveway. She comes back and was telling me she didn’t see anything, I told her I didn’t either. All of a sudden we heard a ruckus. What sounded like dogs barking and howling but they were close. Mom goes to the front door, looks through the blinds and hollers for me. On our front porch stands like ten dogs of different kinds. They are all staring and pawing at our door as they bark and howl. Out of nowhere they just stop and retreat. We don’t know who’s dogs they were. We were freaked out not knowing why they done this or if they’d be back. The next morning our porch was covered in muddy paw prints. To this day we still don’t know what caused them to act that way.

DOG GONE

Shortly after turning 13 I had talked my parents into letting me have a dog. It just so happened their friends dog had puppies at our house so I got to pick first. I chose the runt who had the same markings as the mom, except she was fawn colored. I named her sunshine, I know how cliche of me. She became my best friend and loved to play. Fetch was her favorite. We’d sit at the table as she got a little older and with my parents door open we’d have clear shot to toss her ball. She’d run and fetch it and bring it right back. One day she was playing and had brought me her ball, after throwing it she took off. Her ball went into my parents room and rolled under the bed. She runs towards their room and as she gets to the door way she comes to a halt spins around and runs back towards me. Her tail was between her legs and she flew underneath my chair as if she was hiding. I stand up and try to get her to come out, she hesitated but comes to me. As she’s walking towards me I back up towards the room. She starts putting her ears down and perks her head up and then puts it down. I try to get her to follow me and she would take a few steps, then back up again. I didn’t see anything but knew she must’ve. That incident happened on and off for years. I’m not sure what she saw or experienced that scared her like that.

NOT SO HOME ALONE

Our house was located in a small city. We didn’t live far from a local owned grocery store. Some days me parents would walk to the store. One day they decided they wanted to go and I didn’t, so they let me stay home. They told me to keep the door locked and stay inside. I had my dog so I felt ok with doing that. They left and had been gone for about 15 minutes. Me and sunshine were in the living room. I was posted up on the couch watching tv and she was laying on the floor by the couch. From the kitchen it sounded like a chair was being dragged across the floor. Knowing I’m alone, it catches my attention. My dog heard it too because her head jolted up and she looked towards the kitchen. I get up and walk to the kitchen entrance and scan the room. I don’t see anything. Sunshine followed me so she’s standing right next to me. I look down at her and as i look back up the cabinets flew open. Me and sunshine both took off. I broke the promise. When my parents came home I was sitting on the porch with my dog. They weren’t mad once I told them what happened. The cabinets were still open from the incident.

CLOSET CASE

After the incident of our suspected closet prank that turned out to be a ghost, my closet became an issue. I’d hear knocking from it. I couldn’t sleep with it open. Even closed I’d have Erie feelings. I finally had enough of it. My mom suggested using a rosary, so I got my rosary, opened my closet and separated the clothes hanging up. On the back wall there conveniently was a nail already. I hung the rosary on it and shut the door. The knocking stopped, the shaking stopped and it all seemed calm. One day as I was looking for a shirt I go to pull a hanger down and there on the end of this wire hanger, is the rosary. It was hanging on the end. I’m not sure how it even stayed without falling or how it got there. I took it off and hung it back up. I’ve always thought maybe that was its way of trying to get rid of the rosary from the closet.

THE MAN IN THE GARAGE

We had this old garage that had living quarters on one side. We used it for storage and sometimes a hangout spot. I was sixteen and helping my mom baby sit. The little girl was around 5 at this time. She was my little buddy so she followed me around. Me and my boyfriend at the time was in the garage. He was going through some old items left in the attic. Me and Makayla were playing while he done that. Once he was done we got ready to head inside. He walks out and we follow. I turn around to shut the door. Makayla looks at me and asks if I’m going to leave that man in there. Thinking she meant my boyfriend I pointed and said he’s right there. She shook her head and pointed to the back, before I shut the door. I looked and didn’t see anyone. I told her nobody was there. She just pointed and said he’s right there. It was then I realized she saw something I didn’t. I shut the door and told her he was staying in there. I grabbed her hand and walked inside the house. She never claimed to see him again.

WATCHING AS YOU SLEEP

I got pregnant at 17, I had just graduated high school. Me and my boyfriend had an apartment and lived together. He worked everyday. One morning i woke up not able to move. I couldn’t scream or even speak. My head couldn’t move but my eyes were wide open. I could see my room, I glance over my boyfriend is gone to work. At the side of the bed there a woman with long dark hair standing there watching me. Her hair has her face covered. She stares at me, while I lay there scared, still not able to move. Once she disappears, my body finally releases and I’m able to move. I sat up scared and looking around the room. Once I see that there’s no one there I get up and walk into the living room. The rest of the day I stay in the living room, but can’t quit thinking about what had happened. I get on the laptop and try to do some research. I learned that there is a thing called sleep paralysis. Then I’m led to another page about paranormal experiences with sleep paralysis. Another article brought up a witch from the Salem witch trails. My boyfriend comes in from work and asks me what I’m doing. I tell him what happened and he tells me I’m crazy that ghost aren’t real and not to look into it. I finish up my research and come across a picture of one of the so called witches and my jaw dropped. She looked just like the lady from this morning. I don’t tell him in fear he’d just shoot it down. This was just the start of my sleep paralysis experiences.

DEADBOLTS DON’T MATTER

The apartment I lived in was fairly new. They were built just a year before we moved in. The rent was a little high for two bedrooms and one bathroom but they were really nice. There was a front door and a back door. Both doors had deadbolts along with the regular lock. One morning me and my boyfriend woke up and headed to the living room. He walked out before me and when I came out he was looking towards the back door. He had locked them that night, I watched as he done it. Yet, there before us was our back door wide open. We called the landlord. Other than him we were the only ones who had a key. I walked to the door looked around outside, then shut it and relocked it. We started checking throughout the apartment to see if anything was missing. Nothing was missing or out of place. This happened so frequently that we expected it anymore. Nothing was ever stolen. It was quite weird not knowing who or what was doing this and why were they doing it?

AN UNFAMILIAR VISITOR

I’ve lived in this town since I was nine. Everyone knows each other and I was well known due to my dad. One afternoon me and my boyfriend was sitting in our living room watching tv. It was summertime, we had the doors closed with the air on. As we’re watching tv we hear a door open. We both look over to the back door. This woman walks in, she just stares at us. My boyfriend asked her who she was and why she just walked in. She didn’t say anything, just turned and walked back out the door. I’ve never seen this woman before. It made my stomach turn after making a connection though. She looked just like the woman I had seen standing at my bed during my first sleep paralysis incident. He ran out after her but she had disappeared. Our backyard was close to a gas station, and not far from a main road. We wondered where she could’ve went that she got away so quick. These days I still don’t know if she was the same woman I saw in my room. If she was, why? How many times had she been in there before? It gives me chills just thinking about it. Anytime we went out we kept an eye out to see if we saw her about, but we never did.

LAST GOODBYE

It was July 2011, my phone started ringing. I looked at the time and it was 1 am. I knew something was wrong. I answered, to my mom crying. My dad had passed away. He was in the hospital and we knew it was just a matter of time. I woke my boyfriend up and we went over to her house for a bit so she wasn’t alone. After visiting for a few hours we decide we need to go back home and get some sleep. I was pregnant and exhausted. We get laid down, he falls asleep pretty quick. I laid there thinking about everything. Finally I close my eyes and try to fall asleep. I start feeling like someone is next to me, you know the feeling you get when someone is hovering. I open my eyes and see a silhouette of a man, he was leaned over me. I didn’t feel scared, I felt peace and calmness. As he stands up he turns to walk away, he stops and looks over at me. It was then that I realized the man standing there was my dad. He was back to his healthy self before the diabetes had taken over him. I smiled and then he disappeared . It was like he came to say goodbye. I finally went to sleep that night. When I woke up I told my boyfriend what had happened he told me I was crazy. He didn’t believe in ghost. A few days passed and I was with a friend all day, when I came home my boyfriend was sitting on the couch. I could tell he was distraught about something.I asked him what was going on. He explained to me that he believes me, he saw my dad. It felt good to finally have some support. We both knew he was there to say goodbye and let us know everything was going to be ok.

THE MAN IN THE WINDOW

One summer night before bed we took the pups outside to use the bathroom. We had already locked the front door and was out on the back porch. I’m on the phone with my mom while the dogs are walking around. The kitchen window was above the sink and not far from the back door. As I’m talking I notice something moving in the window.I pause and my boyfriends has already jumped up. He rushes inside and there’s no one there. I tell my mom I’d call her back, and I gather the pups. Once inside, I ask what he saw. He knew I’d seen something too so we compared our experience. We both saw what looked like a man, he was looking out the window at us and when we noticed him he walked away. The only thing is the direction he walked was right into a wall. That was the second time my boyfriend actually witnessed something and didn’t assume I was crazy but he saw it too.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCKING ON THE CLOSET DOOR

I had my first daughter in September of 2011. Most days we were home alone while her daddy worked. At this time we had to get rid of the pups due to not having enough room for them to run. We did however house a dog for a relative for a little bit at this time. I had laid my daughter in her bassinet next to the couch while I folded clothes. I kept hearing a noise coming from her nursery. As I looked towards her door I saw it was closed and the dog we had was at the door sniffing and whining. It’s like he sensed something. I shewed him away from the door and looked in the room. The noise had done quit and nothing was out of place. I close the door and head back to the couch. This time I heard a loud knock. So I got the bright idea to turn on the baby monitor. We had the one that showed video along with lights that lit up with noise detection. After getting it set up I return to the couch and turn the monitor on. I sat there for a minute and asked whatever it was if it could knock again. Without hesitation I heard 3 knocks, the lights on the monitor lit up with each bang. Then I look over to see the dog back at the door. This time something had frightened him, he whimpered and took off away from the door. I went to examine he room once more and even the closet. Once again nothing was there or misplaced. It was then that this feeling came over me, I felt uneasy. I got my baby dressed and called my mom to tell her I was coming over. I didn’t have my license or a car so I walked. She lived a good 5 miles away but I didn’t care I picked up my daughter and out the door we went. My boyfriend had to come pick us up after work. Luckily he didn’t complain because he had experienced enough to know that things happened.
