The innocents movie review

Ghost and horror movie

Eskil Vogt’s "The Innocents" is a chilling supernatural tale set in a Norwegian housing estate that transforms into a village of the damned. With its eerie atmosphere, top-notch child acting, and suspenseful storyline, it is a movie that could very well become a classic in the horror genre.

The film takes place in a residential development in Romsås, Oslo, surrounded by 60s-style high-rise buildings, an artificial lake, and picturesque woodland. The protagonist, Ida, is a nine-year-old who resents her parents’ attention towards her older sister, Anna, who is autistic. During a long hot summer, Ida is left to play outside and look after Anna. She meets a boy named Ben who shows her a strange mental trick and has a disturbing tendency to torture animals.

At the same time, Anna strikes up a friendship with a girl named Aisha who has telepathic powers. With Aisha’s help, Anna is able to speak for the first time and the two girls’ supernatural abilities become forces for evil.

Ida’s reaction to Ben’s bottle-cap trick, with a sudden fierce grin of pleasure, is unworldly and demonstrates that the children are not innocent. The children's world is a secret from the grownups, reminiscent of Henry James’ "The Turn of the Screw." The film’s story could be interpreted as a metaphor for abuse, family dysfunction, or racism, but Vogt's script is straightforward, with no underlying meaning. The final scene, taking place in complete silence under the nose of the seemingly competent adults, is a masterful display of suspense.

In conclusion, "The Innocents" is a horror movie that unfolds in cold, clear daylight, and is not to be missed. With its unique story and compelling characters, it is a nightmare that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

In Eskil Vogt's icily brilliant supernatural film "The Innocents," a seemingly idyllic Norwegian housing estate is transformed into a village of terror. With Vogt's background as a screenwriter for Joachim Trier, this movie offers an eerie contrast to their previous co-scripted romantic comedy "The Worst Person in the World." The Innocents could become a horror classic, with its ability to cause anxiety and its remarkable child acting performances.

The film takes place in a 1960s-style residential development in Oslo, near a picturesque artificial lake and woodland. Ida, a moody 9-year-old girl, resents her parents for giving so much attention to her autistic elder sister Anna. As summer drags on and Ida is left to look after Anna, she makes a new friend, Ben, who has a dark predilection for animal cruelty and the ability to make a bottle cap fly without touching it. Meanwhile, Anna strikes up a friendship with a girl named Aisha who has telepathic powers, which allows Anna to speak for the first time. However, these supernatural abilities become forces for evil.

The film presents the children's powers as simply existing, without any further explanation. The final showdown, taking place in silence and under the noses of the adults, is a masterful moment of terror. The Innocents is a haunting nightmare playing out in broad daylight.

In conclusion, The Innocents is a must-watch film for horror fans and those interested in the supernatural. With its compelling and eerie storyline, compelling child performances, and ability to evoke anxiety, this film could become a classic in the genre. Watch it before Hollywood has a chance to ruin your perception with a remake
