The Haunted Of Qullissat

Abandoned

By TheNaethPublished about a year ago 2 min read

On the western coast of Greenland, northeast of Disko Island, there was a former village called Qullissat in the Qeqertalik municipality. Disko Island's natural riches were the impetus for the founding of this coal mining community. The hamlet was abandoned when its economic foundation crumbled in 1972, after 48 years of operation of the mines.

Founded in 1924 as a coal mining town, Qullissat was not an Inuit village in the conventional sense. With a population of 995 in 1952, it has grown into a cultural center and the third-largest town in Greenland.

Sullorsuaq (or Vaigat) Strait was hit by a tsunami on 15 December 1952 due to a 5,900,000 cubic meter landslide on the mountainside of Niiortuut, which was located 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Qullissat. At a distance of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) off the southern shore of the Nuussuaq Peninsula, the wave killed one of four fisherman before making landfall at Qullissat, where it caused modest damage with a run-up height of 2.2 to 2.7 meters (7 ft 3 in to 8 ft 10 in).

The 1959–60 Greenlandic Football Championship was won by the Qullissat football team Nanok Idraetslag in 1960.

It was the sixth-largest population center in Greenland by 1966, with 1,400 residents and an annual coal production of 40,000 tonnes (39,000 long tons; 44,000 short tons).

Many individuals from many countries came to work at the coal mine, including Danes, Swedes, and Britons.

In 1966, the Greenland Provincial Council decided to shut down the mine because of low coal quality, declining earnings and demand, and the need for a bigger workforce in the cod fishing business.

A relocation plan had to be finalized before any residents could be relocated.Even though the cod business had already failed by the time the mine was closed on 4 October 1972, it was finally shuttered anyway.Seven hundred people had already departed by that point, and the other five hundred were forcibly removed. Born in Qullissat in 1958, Kuupik Kleist would go on to become Greenland's prime minister. He was the last recorded resident of the village until it was abandoned in 1972.

On October 20, 1972, the village was sold to an entrepreneur, who proceeded to dismantle the land. Even though it was preserved, the town's church was moved to neighboring Ilulissat. The old location of Qullissat was struck by a tsunami that was caused by a massive landslide at Paatuut on November 21, 2000. Paatuut was located 20 kilometers distant across Sullorsuaq (or Vaigat) Strait on the Nuussuaq Peninsula. The run-up height of the tsunami was 28 meters.
