Sure some people have a fear of and will avoid taking the elevator but is there really anything creepy and unsettling about an elevator ride?

If you have no problem taking the elevator, this urban legend might make you change your mind.

There is a fair amount of debate as to where this urban legend originated from. However, most versions of it can be traced to South Korea.

Disclaimer: This is only an urban legend. Please do not attempt this. On the off chance that this game really does unlock something sinister, then that’s even more reason not to play.

The Elevator Game

First off, there are a number of strict rules you must follow precisely or else the elevator game will not work. Supposedly, if you follow all the rules to the game, the elevator will take you to another dimension.

Rule #1 You must play the elevator game alone. No matter how scared you are of what you might see or what might happen, you cannot bring a friend or any other trusted person with you.

No one must get on the elevator with you either. If at any time a person gets on, it’s game over and you must start again. There is one exception. More on that later.

Rule #2 You must be in a building that has at least 10 floors.

Rule #3 You must take the elevator to the floors in the exact sequence as the game states.

Rule #4 You must stay in the elevator during the game until the instructions state you can leave. If you leave, you must repeat the whole procedure again, exactly.

It doesn’t matter what time of day you play this game. However, it is recommended that you play at night as there is a lesser chance of someone getting on and ruining the game for you.

Let’s begin!

Starting at the first floor, get on the elevator and take it to the fourth floor. Easy, right?

The elevator will open to the fourth floor but do NOT get off. Stay where you are and proceed to the second floor.

When the doors open to the second floor, again. Stay where you are and take the elevator back up to the sixth floor.

Reminder: Taking the elevator up and down then back up and down again might grow old real fast, but it is important that you follow the order instructed precisely.

Once the elevator reaches the sixth floor, stay there and press the button to proceed back to the second floor.

Once you get back to the second floor, press the button to take the elevator up to the tenth floor.

This is where things start getting weird!

As soon as you get to the tenth floor, stay on and press for the fifth floor.

This is where the exception to rule # 1 comes in.

When you reach the fifth floor, a woman may or may not enter the elevator. Whether she does or not, do not be concerned either way. It will not affect the game.

However, if she does enter, do not look at her, speak to her, or acknowledge her in any way. If she speaks to you or tries to get your attention in any way, ignore her. She isn’t human and is from another dimension.

If you make the mistake of acknowledging her even as much as looking at her, then you’ve just fallen into her trap and she will take you back with her to her dimension.

I think this step has to be the creepiest and most unnerving part of the game.

Maybe it’s the unsettling mystery of this woman. You don’t know whether she will get on the elevator or not once you reach the fifth floor. Or maybe it’s the idea alone that she isn’t from this dimension. Is she a ghost or something far more sinister?

As much as you might want to escape the elevator now, do NOT get off! Stay in the game. Calmly stay in the elevator and summon for the first floor.

If the elevator takes you to the first floor, then the elevator game has failed. It is game over. Leave the elevator and the building immediately. Do NOT turn or look back. Try again tomorrow.

It is said that even if you follow all the rules precisely, the elevator still might proceed to the first floor signifying the game has failed.

However, if the elevator takes you to the tenth floor, then the elevator game was a success.

Before you reach the tenth floor, you have a chance to back out if you decide that the game has creeped you out quite enough. To exit the game, press any number except for the first and tenth floor.

However, if you are brave or maybe crazy enough to stay in the game, you have two options:

Once you get to the tenth floor, you can stay in the elevator or you can leave.

Reminder: The woman that might have gotten on the elevator with you on the fifth floor will still be there.

If you decide to leave the elevator and I’m sure many would, the woman in the elevator might call out asking you where you’re going or if you're alright. Again. Do NOT answer her or acknowledge her in any way. It's a trick! Just keep going.

Once you’ve stepped out onto the tenth floor, you’ve stepped into another dimension. Some say it's an alternate universe.

It is alright to explore, however, it is crucial that you keep the elevator that brought you there within your sight at all times. It is the only way you will be able to return to your own dimension.

I’m sure very few would dare wander far.

How would you know if you’re really in another dimension?

There will be a few signs:

Electronics won’t work. Not even cell phones. So if you fear for your life and attempt to make a desperate call for help, your cell phone will not be able to save you.

There will be a darkness that covers everything except for a glowing red cross some claim to have seen as a reflection in the windows.

Things will just feel off. Even if things appear to look normal at first, there will be a subtle strangeness to your surroundings.

Did you decide to leave the elevator?

When you are ready to get back on the elevator, you must follow the procedure of floors precisely again. The elevator will start to ascend back to the tenth floor. Cancel this action immediately by pressing any button except for 1 and 10 before you pass the ninth floor. The elevator will take you back to the first floor and you can now exit.

Wait! Before you leave the elevator, observe your surroundings carefully! If anything appears even the most subtlety off or if there is a strangeness you can’t explain, do NOT leave the elevator. Go through the procedure of floors again until you are sure you have returned to your own dimension.

Did you decide to stay on the elevator?

Maybe the fear of not being able to get back on the elevator is worse than staying on it.

Calmly summon for the first floor. When the elevator takes you there, leave the elevator and the building immediately. Do not look back.

You have successfully survived the elevator game.

I think the most unsettling thing about this urban legend is how unpredictable it is.

Will you encounter an eerie and mysterious woman on the fifth floor? Will the elevator take you to another dimension? What other strange phenomena might you encounter?

The fear of the unknown surrounding this game can be more chilling than the game itself.

I love a good urban legend. This one is very creepy. I'll never look at an elevator the same again. Thanks for sharing.
