The Echoes Beneath
Some sounds are not meant to be heard... especially when they never stop.
Jared had always been fascinated by the abandoned mining town of Vesper Hollow, a place that had been left to rot for over fifty years. Its dark history had always intrigued him—rumors of disappearances, strange noises in the dead of night, and whispers about an underground cavern that no one had ever returned from. He’d heard the stories from locals who insisted the town was cursed, but Jared was a skeptic, eager to explore the decaying ruins and uncover the truth for himself.
On a crisp autumn evening, with a backpack of supplies and a camera in hand, he ventured into the heart of Vesper Hollow. The air was thick with decay as he passed by the rotting wooden structures, their windows shattered and doors hanging loosely on their hinges. The ground was littered with the remnants of a town that had been forgotten by time, the remnants of a place once filled with life now overtaken by weeds and silence.
But there was one building that still stood, half-hidden among the trees at the edge of town. It was an old, crumbling hotel, its facade barely holding together, yet still imposing. According to the rumors, the hotel had been the last place people had disappeared from, and no one dared to go near it after dark.
Jared was drawn to it, the darkness inside beckoning him like a moth to a flame. He pushed open the door, the rusty hinges creaking in protest as he entered. The inside of the hotel was musty, the air thick with the scent of mildew and rot. Dust floated in the air, caught in the dim light filtering through the broken windows. The silence was deafening, broken only by the sound of his footsteps echoing off the walls.
He explored the hotel floor by floor, snapping pictures of the peeling wallpaper and crumbling furniture. Everything seemed frozen in time, as if the town had been abandoned overnight. But as he descended into the basement, something strange began to happen.
At first, it was faint—a distant hum that seemed to vibrate through the walls, like a low-frequency sound that only the most sensitive ears could detect. Jared paused, his curiosity piqued. The sound grew louder, a persistent, almost mechanical noise that reverberated through the ground beneath his feet.
He continued down the stairs, the sound growing steadily louder until it was almost unbearable. It felt like the noise was coming from deep within the earth itself, a pulsing rhythm that matched the beating of his heart. His skin prickled with unease as he approached the basement, the source of the sound now more distinct, though still muffled.
As he entered the basement, the noise stopped.
Jared stood still for a moment, his breath shallow. The basement was pitch black, save for the faint light from his flashlight. The walls seemed to close in on him as he scanned the room, searching for the source of the noise. His eyes settled on a large, rusted door at the far end of the room. It was ajar, revealing a staircase leading down into the earth, where the noise had originated.
His heart raced as he approached the door, each step heavier than the last. The noise wasn’t just a sound; it was a presence. He could feel it now, something alive, something ancient, deep beneath the surface.
He descended the stairs, his flashlight casting eerie shadows on the stone walls. The air grew colder as he went deeper, his breath visible in the dim light. The silence was broken only by the faint scraping sound of his shoes against the stone steps.
Then, he heard it again.
A whisper.
It was a voice, low and unintelligible, but it sent a chill down his spine. He froze, listening intently. The whispering grew louder, though still distorted, as if it were coming from a far distance.
"Come closer," it whispered. "Come deeper."
Jared’s legs felt weak, his body urging him to turn back, but his curiosity overpowered his fear. He moved forward, descending further into the darkness. The sound became more distinct now—voices, murmurs, like a crowd of people speaking in hushed tones. But there was no one around him.
He reached the bottom of the stairs, and what he saw made his stomach turn.
The cavern was vast, its walls lined with stone shelves, each one holding old, cracked lanterns. But what caught Jared’s eye was the floor—a massive, ancient carving that spread out across the entire room, its lines etched deeply into the stone. It looked like a map, but the symbols were unrecognizable, an ancient language he could not even begin to understand.
And in the center of the carving was a dark circle, a void that seemed to absorb the light from his flashlight, an emptiness that felt alive.
The whispering came again, this time clearer, but still impossibly distant.
"Do you hear us now?"
Before he could respond, the ground trembled beneath his feet, and the air grew thick, suffocating. He turned, scrambling back toward the stairs, but the shadows seemed to move with him, closing in around him, blocking his way. The whispering was growing louder now, and the walls seemed to pulse with the sound.
“Don’t leave,” the voice said. “We’ve been waiting.”
Jared stumbled, his heart pounding in his chest as he raced back toward the stairs. The shadows writhed at the edges of his vision, and the whispers became screams, thousands of voices calling out to him from the depths.
He reached the stairs, but as he turned to climb back up, he saw something that froze him in place. The door at the top of the stairs was gone, replaced by a solid wall of stone.
The voices screamed now, their words clearer than ever. "You can never leave."
Jared’s breath caught in his throat as he realized the truth—he had entered a place where time and space had no meaning. The whispers were the echoes of those who had come before him, trapped in the cavern’s endless darkness, their voices forever reverberating in the stone.
And now, his own voice joined theirs.
