The Echo in the Darkness

A Whisper from the Shadows"

By Ambar's TalesPublished about a year ago 3 min read

The house on the hill had always been shrouded in mystery. To the townspeople, it was a cursed place, a relic of a forgotten time. No one dared to go near it except for Clara.

Clara was a curious young woman, too brave for her own good, or so her friends said. Drawn to the house’s history, she decided that tonight she would explore it. Armed with a flashlight and her phone, she ventured to the place everyone else avoided.

The front door, once imposing, was slightly ajar, as if it had been expecting her. Clara pushed the rotting wood and stepped inside. The air was thick, laden with an ancient humidity that seemed to cling to her skin. With each step, the floorboards creaked beneath her feet, the sound echoing in the darkness.

In the center of the foyer, she found an old mirror. The glass was cracked and dirty, but something about it called to her. As she approached, a soft whisper brushed her ear.

“Clara…”

The name echoed in her head, but when she looked around, no one was there. She smiled nervously, convincing herself it was just her imagination.

She continued exploring the house. The walls were covered in mold, and the empty rooms seemed frozen in time. Yet, as she moved forward, she felt a presence behind her, something following her in the shadows.

Every time she turned around, there was nothing but darkness. But the whisper persisted.

“Clara…”

Deciding she had seen enough, she headed back towards the front door. But something had changed. The house, once simply abandoned, now pressed in on her with a nearly tangible darkness.

When she tried to leave, the door wouldn’t budge. Clara pulled with all her strength, but fear was paralyzing her. Suddenly, the flashlight began to flicker, and a cold chill enveloped the room.

“Clara… look at me…”

The whisper was now more insistent, closer. Clara slowly turned back toward the mirror in the foyer, and what she saw stole the breath from her lungs.

She was no longer alone in the reflection. A tall figure, cloaked in darkness, stared at her from the other side of the mirror. Its face, hidden in shadow, revealed only two hollow, empty eyes.

Clara tried to scream, but no sound escaped her lips. The figure raised a hand, and as it did, the flashlight slipped from Clara’s trembling hands, crashing to the floor. Darkness consumed her entirely.

The whisper was now an echo, resonating in every corner of her mind.

“Clara… come with me…”

She felt a cold hand wrap around her wrist, pulling her toward the mirror. She fought with everything she had, but it was as if her body was rooted to the spot, unable to move. The mirror began to change; the glass transformed into a liquid surface, bubbling and rippling.

In one final, desperate attempt, Clara closed her eyes and collapsed to the floor. The whisper invaded her, stronger and more piercing than ever, and suddenly, everything went silent.

When she opened her eyes, she was back in the foyer, alone. The door, once immovable, was now wide open, inviting her to leave. Without looking back, she ran towards freedom, feeling the cool night air embrace her.

She never returned to the house on the hill, but every night, as she closes her eyes, Clara still hears the whisper in the darkness.

“Clara… we will meet again…”
