The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. "Who would leave a candle burning in a empty cabin?" Monica said from the back seat. Eddie and Roman laughed and agreed with her statement. Eddie, Monica, and Roman planned to stay at the Hicks Road cabin for the Memorial Day weekend. Eddie and Roman were always fascinated by the history of the Hicks Road cabin. Their father would tell them the horror story of the Hicks Road cabin since they were little kids. Growing up, all of the neighbor kids would talk about it. Hicks Road was always known to be a creepy path to travel on, but the cabin itself was always hard to find. Some people believed it was a myth and very few people found the cabin, but they never lived to tell the tale.
The cabin was built in 1879 by Ronald "The Hook" Douglas. They called him "The Hook" because he was the town's best and quickest fisherman. His cabin would be the town's fish market, where he sold bass, bluegills, trouts, and walleyes. The Hook had a wife, a son, a newborn baby, and a family hunting dog. On one hot summer's day, The Hook was gutting fish on the front porch and swarms of flies were surrounding the cabin. Because of the heat and the buzzing of the flies, the Hook completely snapped. He gutted his entire family with a meat hook. He sliced them open from groin to their throats. Afterwards, he threw all of their organs and guts into the outhouse and he shoved their bodies inside the dark, reeking pit. His customers and neighboring townspeople complained about the horrendous smell on his property. The townspeople were also suspicious about the disappearance of his family and the Hook knew there would soon be a manhunt for him. So, on the last day of summer, the townspeople ambushed the Douglas residence, until they found gutted fish hanging inside and outside of the cabin. The fish were rotting away in the summer's heat. Their guts were slimy and melting from the ceiling and hitting the floorboards of the cabin. But, when the townspeople got to the outhouse, The Hook decided to go into the dark, reeking pit of the outhouse. It was unclear if he was hiding in there or if he intentionally committed suicide. But the Hook died in the outhouse by suffocation of human excrement and his decaying family. That was the beginning of the haunted cabin. People who would stay at the cabin would disappear or die under weird circumstances.
Eddie and Roman decided to started a YouTube channel. They wanted their first episode to be documented on the Hicks Road Cabin. The boys were doing research on the owners of the cabin. It wasn't easy finding their contact information. The owners were dismissive and shot down the boys multiple times about renting out the cabin. But once the boys' father offered an enormous amount to rent out the place for the weekend, they finally gave in. "This is going to be amazing! I never thought we would actually see this place in person." Eddie said. When Eddie and Roman were kids, Eddie loved hearing and talking about the Hicks Road cabin. The horror stories never scared Eddie, but Roman was always afraid. Arriving there, Roman felt uneasy and misplaced, he didn't think it was right to exploit the history of the Hicks Road cabin. The boys invited Monica, she lived next door to them. They all grew up together since preschool. Monica always had a crush on Eddie, but he didn't feel the same way. Eddie seen Monica as a little sister. But Roman was in love with Monica. He was so happy that Monica came to help with their new project.
Eddie grabbed the spare key from the crease of the window seal where the lit candle was set. Once he unlocked the door, it creaked open slowly. They didn't enter right away, if anything they were looking inside making sure no one was in there. It wasn't completely dark and hot inside. It was so hot, the young adults forehead were damped with sweat. Eddie walked in first and Monica followed afterward. Roman slowly made his way in with the cooler and his sleeping bag. "It's so hot in here." Eddie said after he blew out the candle. Monica checked the walls to see if there was a thermostat to change the temperature, but there was nothing. Just a fireplace to warm up the residence. "Well there's no thermostat. It feels like a jungle in here." Monica replied. Roman was slowly looking around the the cabin, looking for historical marks that past residence left behind. Some carvings one the walls but no messages of evil. Just dents and craters.
The cabin's kitchen looked fairly brand new. Like it was installed maybe ten years ago but nobody used it yet. It had a sink, cabinets, a oven/stove, with a microwave on top, and an old-fashion refrigerator. The cabin was a one bedroom. The bedroom had no electricity, just an old-fashion lantern with a filmsy metal twin bed. Across from the bedroom was an unfinished bathroom installation. There was a dirty sink, an unfinished shower, and no toilet. The bathroom was the scariest part of the cabin. There was a back door between the unfinished bathroom and the bedroom. The back door led to the outhouse and the outside bath tub. The old copper bath tub contained an axe inside. The tub was on an wooden platform connected to the outhouse. The inside of the outhouse was emaculate. It looked as if someone hosed and scrubbed the outhouse down. Or no one touched it at all. It didn't even look like someone was on fire in there. Nothing. It looked brand new.
Eddie taking footage on his phone, giving a private tour around the cabin. "The owners said the outhouse is a diaster. They recommended us to use the woods as out bathroom." Roman said.
"Maybe they sent a maid to come clean up the mess." Eddie suggested as he was filming the outhouse.
"But the owners said that no one has been here for eight to ten years. The outhouse looks brand new." Eddie replied nervously.
"I don't know, but do you guys smell something foul?" Monica said, as she put her hands over her senses. "Yeah." Roman replied covering his mouth and nose.
"It's the Hooks' fish he chopped up or his family." Eddie laughed
"I don't know. But I'm ready to setup inside." Roman replies as he walks through the back door. Monica follows him. But once they arrived inside the foul smell became worse. Like the smell was coming from inside the cabin. "Where is that smell coming from?!" Roman exclaimed as he tries to find the problem. He opens every cabinet, the refrigerator, the oven, and then he opens the microwave. The mircowave was filled with dead fish inside of it. It looked as if someone threw live fish in there and set the microwave on the highest temp at the longest time. With flies buzzing out and maggots crawling on the fishes insides. "Oh my god! This is absolutely disgusting!" Monica gags. Eddie comes in from the back door and starts to film the disgusting surprise. "Maybe the Hook is warning us." Eddie laughs. "Shutup Ed. I don't want to hear that, dude." Roman replies as he slams the microwave shut. "I should clean that out." He suggests.
"Don't clean that out, Roman. The owners should have cleaned this place before we got here." Eddie said.
"Yeah, but the owners said to take the cabin as it is. Dad paid a lot of money for us to stay here. This isn't an Airbnb. We practically bribed them." Roman said.
"Well, I'm gonna grab the rest of the stuff from the car. I guess we can warm up our leftover pizza in the oven." Monica suggested. As Monica goes out the front door Eddie follows her too. As they both approach the car Eddie and Monica start talking to each other, which was not an important conversation. But Roman didn't know that. Roman seen the both of them from the window. The flies were buzzing louder around Romans' ears. The buzzing was in perfect unison, so perfect that they were talking to Roman. "Monica wants your brother. Your brother wants Monica. He doesn't care about your feelings towards her. They don't care about you. They should die! Kill them. Kill them!" The flies say in unison whispers. Roman becomes dazed and one fly enters into his ear.
Monica brings two dufflebags on each shoulder and a pizza box. Eddie brings a dufflebag and a couple grocery bags. When they enter the cabin Roman was nowhere to be found. "Roman!" Monica shouts. "Where the hell did he go? Roman?!" Eddie exclaims. There was a trail of the dead microwaved fish leading to the backdoor and it was wide open. The swarms of flies traffic in and out of the back door. "Roman! Where the hell are you dude?" Eddie walks to the backdoor. Thwack! Roman axed Eddie face in. Monica started to scream, running towards the front door. Roman quickly caught up to Monica and axed her legs. Monica screamed louder. "Roman! Why are you doing this?!" She exclaimed. Roman axes her throat to the dirt and dead leaves, nearly decapitating Monica. "Yall shouldn't have blew out that candle." Roman said, but it wasn't Roman's voice that came out.
Five days later, Eddie and Roman's father drive to the Hicks Road cabin. The brothers never checked in with there father. The father wanted to know the progress of their YouTube project, but no response. He even contacted Monica, and no answer. Father contacted the owners, the owners didn't answer either. No answer from both parties. Once he pulled up, Eddie's car was parked close to the front porch. He exited his vehicle and noticed the lit candle on the front window seal. As he walked up to the window seal, he blew out the candle. He entered into the cabin, and shouted for the boys' name. No answer. There was an awful foul smell coming from the cabin. There was fish guts all over the floor, along with fish nailed to the ceiling. Fish slime and guts were dropping onto the floorboards. "Eddie?! Roman?! What the hell is going on in here?!" He shouted. He followed the dead microwaved fish trail to the backdoor and the outhouse door was wide open with millions of swarming flies. They were welcoming the newest guest. He covered his face with his shirt as he walked into the outhouse. He took one look inside and seen Romans' eyes peeking up at him through the feces, guts, and mud of the dark, reeking pit. The buzzing grows louder, until a fly enters into fathers' ear. The father says to himself, "You shouldn't have blew out that god damn candle!" He slowly closes the outhouse door behind him and enter into the dark, reeking pit of human excrement and his decaying sons.
