The Abandoned Haunted Mansion
By: Matthew Howland

The night was dark and stormy as I made my way up the creaky old stairs to the dilapidated mansion on the hill. I had been hired by the wealthy Mr. Harrison to investigate strange occurrences at the mansion, which had been abandoned for years.
As I reached the top of the stairs, the door swung open and I was greeted by a tall, slender man with piercing blue eyes and a decent-sized build. He introduced himself as Mr. Harrison's lawyer and led me inside.
The mansion was filled with dusty old furniture and cobwebs, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched which became more advanced as the day passed. But the lawyer assured me that it was just my imagination and led me to the study, where Mr. Harrison was waiting.
Mr. Harrison was a middle-aged man with a greasy comb-over and a smug smile. He offered me a seat and explained that he suspected that the mansion was haunted by the ghost of his deceased wife, who had died under mysterious circumstances years ago.
I didn't believe in ghosts, but I needed the money and Mr. Harrison was willing to pay me a generous sum to spend the night in the mansion and see if I could uncover any evidence of paranormal activity.
As the night wore on, I heard strange noises and saw shadows moving in the corners of my eyes. But I attributed it to the storm raging outside and the creaky old house.
Just as I was about to call it a night, I heard a faint whisper coming from the next room. I followed the sound and found myself in the library.
There, standing in the corner, was the ghost of a woman. She was transparent and ethereal, with long, flowing hair and a white dress.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The ghost of Mrs. Harrison.
She floated towards me, a look of sorrow in her eyes. She reached out a hand as if to touch me, and I felt a sudden sense of dread wash over me.
But before she could make contact, she was suddenly yanked backwards and disappeared into the shadows.
I was shaken but determined to find out what was going on. I searched the mansion from top to bottom, but found nothing out of the ordinary.
Just as I was about to give up, I stumbled upon a hidden passageway leading to the basement. I descended the stairs, my heart racing with fear and excitement.
The basement was dark and musty, and I had to use my flashlight to see. But as I shone the light around the room, I saw something that made my blood run cold.
There, in the corner, was a body.
I approached the body and saw that it was Mr. Harrison. He had a large gash on his head and a look of terror on his face.
I was frozen in shock, trying to make sense of what I was seeing. Had the ghost of Mrs. Harrison killed Mr. Harrison? Or was there another explanation?
Just then, I heard a noise behind me. I turned to see the lawyer standing in the doorway, a wicked smile on his face.
"You shouldn't have come poking around," he sneered.
It all clicked into place. The lawyer had killed Mr. Harrison and staged the haunting to cover his tracks.
I ran for the stairs, but the lawyer was faster. He tackled me to the ground and straddled me, a knife glinting in his hand.
"I can't have you telling anyone about this," he hissed.
