A Campfire Tale

The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window.

Nobody dared to live in the cabin. A rumour circulated around these woods that it was possessed by poltergeists. Those who had explored the cabin in the past had never come out.

The candle had never burned before until one fateful night when it burned bright then died out and then relit itself brighter and higher than ever before. I had always heard the blood-curdling wailing, screaming and shrieking, though I had never before seen a candle in the window. I like many other campers in these woods had always stayed well away from the old spooky cabin, as there were rumours that once someone got inside the cabin, they never came out. No birds or any other animal ever goes near that cabin, and a human being has not been seen lurking around the cabin for decades.

I got my camping fire ready to toast my bread on the skewer. I had just lavishly buttered my beautiful golden toast and I was looking forward to eating it when I suddenly heard a wild rattling from the cabin door. The wind blew violently around me and it had suddenly changed from a beautiful hot summer's night to an extremely freezing winter. The weather had become so cold that it put my fire out.

I was about to pack everything into my van and leave. I decided this trip was worth abandoning due to the extreme change in the weather. Suddenly there was heavy thunder and extreme fork lightning. The rain beat down furiously and thick, causing a mist so extreme that you couldn't see anything through it. I glanced through my van's main window; I could swear I saw three bodies come out of the cabin with tall forks, walking toward my van. Terrified out of my brain, I started the van at full speed, though the wheels screeched heavily and the van would not move. After applying brutal force, I finally got the van moving.

The thunder was loud and furious, and the lightning was extremely vicious and fiery. The air was filled with mourning, screeching and shrieking. The sounds were terrifying enough to wake the dead.

I glanced out of my window once more, and to my horror, the bodies had multiplied and come closer; every single one of them was carrying tall forks. I looked toward the cabin. I could no longer see the candle burning, but I could see that these bodies were crawling out of the door like zombies.

I had no idea what to do; though if I didn't do something this whole wood would become a camp of death. There was a nauseous stench of blood and discomposed body parts coming from outside into my van. I pulled my sweater over my nose to mask the smell as I did not have anything else. The smell almost made me vomit.

The candle was still burning; only this time it burned higher and the flame had an evil red glow to it. I saw blood dripping from the flames. Suddenly the flames burned higher and faster, then they spread wide across the window. To my horror, I saw a disfigured face in the flames. It was only part of a face covered in scarring and loosened flesh that fell into the melting wax of the candle; only half a jaw was showing.

The screeching and shrieking sounded like something was too close for comfort. I was shell-shocked and I had lost track of time. I took a deep breath and attempted to recollect myself to the best that I could. Once I could focus again, I noticed that one of the doors of my van had been ripped off. As terror overcame me, I started shaking violently.

I knew I had to get out of here fast!

I revved up my van until I hit full speed and drove. I didn't have a plan, nor did I know where I was going. I just kept on driving through the woods and the muddy terrain that felt like a thick, deep, watery muddy grave beneath my wheels. I felt a large BUMP! beneath my wheels, and I couldn't move any further no matter how much I tried. I pulled back, trying to force my van to move; though it was no use as my van wouldn't budge. I had no choice but to get out of my van.

It was a case of move or die.

I had no idea of the horror that lay ahead of me. I stepped into the thick mud, though I fell as soon as my boots hit the ground. I shoved and pulled hard in an attempt to loosen myself from the thick sludge that smelled like a million drunks had vomited in it. I vomited myself twice, but I knew that I had to keep moving otherwise I would die here.

Suddenly there was a huge crack of thunder and a large bolt of lightning shot from the sky above me. The bolt of lightning hit the ground directly to the side of me, and I was almost struck. The ground below me shook wildly, and I attempted to grab a ledge that was nearby only to find this was no use; I slipped and fell back into the mud. The mud had risen a couple of feet now, and I could feel myself sinking deep into it. Sweat beaded my brow and dripped down my face.

Then I saw it.

The cabin had somehow moved to a place directly in front of me.

I stared at the cabin.

I knew the one I saw with the candle in the window was located a few kilometres away from me, so this couldn't possibly be the same cabin.

I also knew that this was the only cabin in these woods because nobody had dared to build here for decades.

I could just see the window, though I had sunk halfway into the mud now. I noticed the candle was still there, only the flame was burning more violently and the flame was almost as black as the mud that I was sinking in. My entire body ached, and my hands were bloodied and painful from trying to get out of this sludge. I was feeling weaker by the minute.

I mustered whatever strength I had left, and attempted to pull myself out of the mud again. This time, I tried to apply more force, but I was forced under the thick sludge. I could no longer see or breathe, and I tried to kick my legs upwards in an attempt to pull myself back to the surface. I felt a dry and scaled hand grip my legs yanking me back under.

I panicked wildly because now I was paralysed and could no longer move. However, the hand that gripped me now felt like it had multiplied by the dozen and I was being moved through the horrible sludge.

My breath had been drained and my eyes closed. My entire body fell into a state of unconsciousness. I have no idea how long I had been in this state, though when I woke up there were billows of smoke all around me, and the smell of burning wood and dead bodies.

I knew that I had been dragged into the cabin.

I had been tied down with thick metal chains, and there were millions of tubes attached to me from which my blood was being drained from my body into a large steel container.

The shrieking and screeching were deafening in here.

I realized that these were zombies looking to feed on humans.

I looked through blurry eyes to my right. I could barely see through them, but I noticed that a huge amount of flesh had been cut away from my right arm. You could see the bone beneath my skin. I was gasping for breath, and I felt completely delirious.

There was no point in screaming as there were no other humans left in the woods; therefore my screams would fall on deaf ears.

I tried to fight my way out of the tubes which were tugging at my veins. I could feel the blood trickling through them, but it was no use; the tubes were fitted tight like steel locked into my arms.

I attempted to see through the thick black smoke above me, and out of nowhere, a horrible translucent white face appeared through the smoke. It had horrific bulging eyes that oozed with blood; as there was nowhere for the blood to drip, it dripped straight down the thin air to the floorboards. It opened its mouth which was gigantic and not truly attached to it, and let out a loud WAIL!!

Over a thousand knives were blown directly at me, and they missed me, hitting the sides of the stretcher to which I was tied. I let out a loud gasp of breath and the face must have heard me because it blew a gag from its mouth which tightly wrapped around my mouth and the whole of my head. The bulging eyes were watching my every move and I dared not speak.

Suddenly out of nowhere, I was surrounded by thousands of horrible-looking creatures that had flesh falling from their bodies. One opened its mouth, revealing razor-sharp pointed teeth and attempted to bite my flesh. I could barely see it through the thick smoke plummeting around me, though I could just see its face and I felt the teeth sink into me like being stabbed with millions of razors. The rest joined in and there was no escape.

The candle in the window of the abandoned cabin in the woods continues to burn as I tell you this story. I am the protector of the cabin, and this is no camping night-mare or story. Ghosts, poltergeists, Zombies and anything you see in your camping nightmares haunt these woods.

And tonight...

YOU ALL MUST DIE!!!
