Villainess Review: Ashley Fallon (Charmed)
Hard to believe that the original Charmed series is celebrating 25 years this month. I remember seeing the first promo for the series, which aired on The WB for eight seasons between 1998 and 2006. Originally, the series starred Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano as a trio of sisters who discover that they come from a family of wiccans. The series was the last great brainchild of the iconic Aaron Spelling, and regarding the three stars, Doherty played the eldest sister, Prudence "Prue" Halliwell, Combs played middle sister Piper Halliwell, and Milano portrayed the youngest sister, Phoebe Halliwell.

However, beneath the gruesome surface, they have always sought to present themselves as morality plays, emphasizing that each victim, strapped into ingenious yet horrifying electro-medieval contraptions, endures the agonies of the damned due to sins they committed in the real world. While the concept of sin is portrayed in these films in an overt and almost corny manner, it serves a purpose within the narrative.

Friday the Thirteenth: The Series
"Friday the Thirteenth: The Series" (which has no relation to the film series of Friday the Thirteenth) was a horror series of the late Eighties, a time when there was a veritable glut of genre television programs, mostly anthology shows such as "Tales from the Darkside," "Tales from the Crypt," "Amazing Stories," and the revived "Twilight Zone." "Freddy's Nightmares" was essentially an anthology series, but each episode was connected by the presence of the wisecracking, razor-tipped glove-wearing mad slasher of dreamland. "Werewolf" was one of the best of them, but suffered from the same fate as the Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno starring series of "The Incredible Hulk": there are only so many plots you can place the shape-shifting drifter into while assuring at least ONE transformation into a monster before the credits roll (i.e. it all gets a bit redundant). Rounding all of this out was the short-lived pseudo-comic show "Monsters," which was obligated to feature a new creature every episode, and a television adaptation of "The War of the Worlds." It tanked early, as did "Max Headroom," and a series spin-off of the mega-hit TV movie "V" and its sequel "V: The Final Battle."

The Veil (1958)
"The Veil" was a TV series from 1958 that predated the similarly-themed "One Step Beyond," hosted by John Newland. It presented stories based on real-life psychic occurrences, and was hosted by and starred Boris Karloff in each episode, who started each episode sitting framed by a roaring fire (a subtle visual suggestion of the infernal, perhaps), after which he would grace each episode (save for one) with his unique presence; although to be honest, here he sometimes seems as if his acting is on auto-pilot. However, his unique aura still shines through in episodes such as "The Doctors," and "Food on the Table."
