Possessive
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The pale skinny man with wool trousers and gray teeth gazed appraisingly upon the dusty space, his gray grin widening. He had with him a backpack filled with more cheap candles purchased at the local Tuesday Morning thirty minutes back the windy road at the edge of Collinsville, a knock-off Zippo that he stole off an army buddy eighteen years back, and a hunting knife that seemed to be vibrating with eagerness to cut something. Cut anything. He imagined the knife was the tooth of an ancient, hungry monster and that it thirsted for meat the way the monster used to. Needed satiation, he often thought to himself.

The Mad Woman of the Crazy Mountains
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night a candle burned in the window. A black and white photo of a woman stood next to it, facing outside as if watching the mountain in the distance. An old man came out of the cabin, a riffle slung over his shoulder, a machete in one hand and a photo album in the other. He groaned as he rested into the chair on the porch and set the book in his lap. His cracked, aged hands gently opened the book and caressed the first photo. A family sat in front of the cabin, 4 boys and a man stood around a woman sitting in a chair, her hand on her round belly.

A Candle in the Window
The cabin in the woods was abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. At first, I wasn’t sure what I was seeing as I slipped past the last row of bare trees and cautiously entered the clearing. Surely, the cabin was empty. It was almost a full day’s trek to reach it from the main trail system in this part of the park. It was uncommon enough in the summer for anyone to hike in this deep, but to come here in late-October was unheard of. Only a handful of people knew the location of the cabin. The only possible way someone could be here was if they were lost.

Play with fire
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. I was curious, I had taken this trail after meeting with friends night after night and this was the first time I saw anything alive in that desolate, lonely cabin. Numerous urban legends had been told over the years about aliens, UFO’s and unexplained phenomena being witnessed in the woods but I had taken this trail sometimes multiple times a day and never saw anything strange.

Three Missed Calls
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but a candle burned in the window on the cold night of September 21st, 2004, a woman named Edith Harper would cross paths with this cabin on her way home from work. Usually, Edith would take her regular route, taking a dirt road to the next corner and then crossing over to 50th Street to catch the 10 O'Clock bus, the last bus to run that night.

A New Dawn
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Dawn sat, cross-legged on the splintery floor and began the ritual. She rolled out the piece of sheepskin, affixed it to the boards with an iron nail driven through each corner, and regarded the hand-made ouija board. The alphabet, numerals, and the words “Yes” and “No” were inscribed in her blood on the leather. The cutting had come easily, as it always did. The difficulty had been in keeping her hand steady as she used the stigmata of her other palm as an inkwell. She placed an inverted shot glass on the board to use as a planchette.

The old man's cabin
"The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night , a candle burned in the window." It was a cold winters night when I looked out my cabin window. I was surprised to see a light, at first I did not know where the light was coming from.
