White Knight
It seemed like every year, Kyle looked forward to snow. Living in North Georgia, he usually found his front yard full of the stuff sometime after Thanksgiving. Kyle fondly remembered the year a blizzard blew in days before Halloween, and they had to Trick or Treat in the snow. Kyle's Batman costume quickly got upgraded with a puffy jacket and some ski boots with snowshoes as he became some obscure snow Batman that his mom had found on one of those little toy check sheets Kyle had pinned on his wall. Kyle loved the snow and would spend hours playing outside, making forts, and having snowball fights with his friends. He only really came in if his parents made him, and only then until he warmed up enough to go back out.

The Window
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. The room was dry, dark, and oddly drafty. It held artifacts and antiques of shapes and sizes that hinted at a past of artisans and historians. The smooth, intricate patterns were marvelous to behold, but she dared not show them to anyone besides her husband. They would be punished severely if anyone in their community found out they had even a small collection of antiques, let alone one this size.

The Grate X
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. “Everything is so gloomy… at least that’s how everything feels. What a sad, lonely, and lifeless place this is. They say they keep us here for our protection, but they only want to strip us from the truth.” Trees are hanging over the coast, and she watches the water rush into the sand. I walk towards her, I rub her shoulder softly; it’s just my way of comforting her. “No need to get gushy on me now, Zavius.” I rub my head, not sure what to respond with. “I agree we deserve to be free, but there’s danger out there, Monica. We’ve seen it ourselves; we know they’re not lying about the Grate X.”

A Moment of Despair
By the time we arrived at our destination, it was past midnight. The sky had a pale red hue, as the blood moon was partially obscured by heavy clouds. The night was long and tiring. We had been walking for three consecutive days, surviving on dates and dried meat. My legs were sore, covered in blisters filled with pus.

The Winter Lord
December is a time of cheer and goodwill for most of the world. People exchange gifts, sing songs, houses are decorated, big meals are eaten with friends and family. Molly didn't learn about any of this until after she left the village. She'd spent her first year away from home getting odd sidelong stares and hearing repressed mumbles as she asked about their preparations and inquired about their sacrifices. No one seemed to know about Him, which filled Molly with hope.

Looking from the Depths
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. It had been a favorite place for all these months. Or was it years? Time had less meaning when the seasons stuttered to a halt and the routines fell by the wayside.
