Dilemma. Runner-Up in The Runaway Train Challenge.
This is a dream. It has to be a dream. Gil’s heart pounded in his throat and he choked on his spit. His legs burned with exhaustion, but he could no longer feel them. They begged him to stop running. As he pushed through bushes and thickets, he felt thorns and branches tear into his cheeks without hesitation. He could not stop running and he could not turn around. The wolf was at his heels.

Abandoned village
I love this village. I've been coming here every summer for almost twenty years. Everything is nearby here: forest, field, and river. The village is relatively large, three kilometers to the nearest village through forests and fields, and about fifteen kilometers to the highway. About three years ago, they began actively buying houses (what to do, people are getting old and dying) for suburban plots.

Sinners Delight
When I was about 13 I would often go on nightly strolls near the small river and skip rocks by my house in New Orleans. I did this about two or three times a week considering that there was not much else for kids my age to do for fun in my town. My mother usually had to join me on these little adventures but sometimes if not too late I was allowed to go alone. On one of these solo trips that I took started off like any other ordinary night by the river. I started shuffling through my pocket until I found my collection of small rocks. I filled my hand up until it was full and began rubbing my finger through the pebbles looking for the smoothest ones. My mother taught me what to look for when trying to find the best rocks for skipping. It must be smooth with sharp edges and fit in the palm of your hand.

The Janus Dichotomy
Romulus (named after one of the mythical founders of Rome) went about his normal morning routine, still half asleep. He apparently had a restless night, but didn’t remember anything out of the ordinary that would have kept him awake. Rom shrugged it off, finished his breakfast, and headed for the door. As he stepped over the threshold, Rom almost tripped over a small package lying on the porch. He scooped it up and tore it open on the way to the car. The mystery package contained a pocket-size notepad and a metal refillable pen. He took the package, tossed it on the passenger seat, and headed for work.

The Allen House
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Frankie almost didn’t see it. He was falling asleep to adult cartoons on TBS, comforted by the television’s flickering lights of color. A harsh zag of white cut through his eyelids once, inciting shock and pain, then came the return of the blue light from the TV. The light flashed again, and he shielded his eyes before opening them to near-darkness.

The ex-wife who saved my life
It happened two years ago. My business trip was coming to an end, and I had to go home. After buying a ticket, I decided to wander around the city, as I still had three hours of time left. On the street, a woman approached me, whom I immediately recognized. This was my first wife, whom I divorced 12 years ago.

Corridor
This story was inspired by the book “The Black Corridor” by Michael Moorcock. It is a totally different concept but the thought of an unknown corridor stuck in my mind leading to this story. I wasn’t certain it would work and you may think that it doesn’t. I would love to hear your feedback in comments or direct messages on Facebook.
