While popular culture may exaggerate the persecution of women by Puritans, it is known that at least a dozen women were hanged. The souls of those unjustly killed are said to be eternally tied to the corrupted place, resulting in haunting experiences for anyone involved with their deaths. The Turner Inol Mansion, also known as the House of Seven Gables, was a place where author Nathaniel Hawthorne spent his childhood hearing stories of Salem's witch trials. His great-great-grandfather, Judge Hathorne, played a role in the executions. Hawthorne added a "u" to his name to distance himself from his family's history. Judge Hathorne, known for his Puritan views, ordered the execution of women accused of having magical powers. Despite their innocence, he showed no remorse. Nathaniel Hawthorne, deeply affected by his ancestor's actions, believed the house was haunted due to its association with Judge Hathorne. Hawthorne was related to the house's owners. Visitors to the house have reported sightings of eerie apparitions.
