Zandar's Prize
Zandar’s Prize By Katherine Taylor Zandar, a rather homely seventeen year old boy, was spending his Saturday afternoon clothes shopping. Zandar had grown 3 inches over the summer break from school and Nina, his mother, was very disgruntled that she had to buy him all new pants, again. While at checkout, Zandar noticed a very peculiar little black, leather bound book sitting on the counter. The leather was very weathered, soft, and embossed with strange symbols on it. He was very drawn to the book, like it had a magnetic force pulling him closer to it. Zandar had never stolen anything in his life, but without hesitation, he quickly whisked the book off the counter while the febal store owner had his back turned.

Fond Memories
Monday 10-19-2020 , 2pm Dear diary…? Is that how this is meant to start off? I’ve never kept a diary before—it has simply not occurred to me that putting my musings down on paper would do anyone any sort of good, least of all me. But oddly enough, from the moment I saw you I felt strangely compelled to write in you. I figured at a minimum it couldn’t do any harm.

Get It Right
Stele Bravegold found his stare fixed straight on Kay Williams. She was bounded by any number of straps to a sleek steel chair, fitted to perfect, upright posture. Stele could move only his eyes and mouth; the leather belt locking his forehead to the cold metallic throne allowed for only sight and sound. A quick glance to the left and right revealed Maggie McAllen and Brock Clapton, both in similar predicaments, frightfully fidgeting against tight bindings.

Hopelessness
On a cold New Mexico winter afternoon Laila was at home pondering if her never ending depression would cease to exist. Whilst realizing life was not worth living with such constant misery she opened her little black note book and began writing her farewell to the world, it had been a few years since she last wrote in her notebook since it seemed she could only fill it with sorry stories from her life. It was left untouched for a while and managed to escape the recycling bin only because it held sentimental value to her. As she began to write she got chills all over her body as if something was telling her not to write that letter. Once the chills left her body she shrugged off the abnormal feeling and began to write when suddenly the book started writing on its own. Startled she jumped from her chair in fear and began to read what the book was writting from a distance the book wrote “Laila do not do what you are planning to do, I know these financial hardships have pushed you to your limits but fear not I have a solution for you...” shocked she began to stare at the book and wonder who and what was writing to her. Because of those few words she now had little hope to hold on to and put the rope and stool back in the attic and went to bed. The next day she continued her usual routine which consisted of going to work, coming home, eat and watch tv. She took the book to work and left it open the whole shift in hopes new writting would appear. As it was getting close to bed time she was second guessing the book and thought to her self “am I really going to endure this misery because a book told me not to!? Silly me” but that little hint of hope fueled her to wait for the book to communicate with her again. As days went by and still no new writting in her book she grew inpatient she decided to go for a drive to distract her mind from the book. While driving through the mountains she decided to take a different route, the un paved route rather than her usual sight seeing spots. As it began to get dark she decided to turn around when she saw a faint light in the near distance. Curiosity got the best of her and she began driving closer to the light. The light seemed to get further the more she drove towards it. Then it happened, her car ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere with no signal on her cell to call for help. “Why me!?” She yelled at the top of her lungs “as if my life wasnt already difficult enough.” She began to walk to the nearest road in hopes to find help. Hours went by and not a soul in sight. While walking through the rocks and rubble she stumbled upon a dirty old mattress that had been dumped by someone. Out of anger she kicked the mattress several times only to end up stuck In it. As she struggled to get her foot out of a tear on the side of the mattress she noticed her foot had pulled out a piece of brown paper, curious she stuck her hand in the crease to discover a paper bag. To her surprise $20,000 cash where wrapped tightly inside that paper bag! She could not believe it she was so happy she began to jump with joy with that money she would now be able to pay her debts catch up on past due bills and be a lot more stress free! It was as if the weigh of the world was lifted from her shoulders. Happily she continued her walk towards the city. By morning she was able to find help to retrieve her car and make it back home. When she went back home she was so eager to finally put a good chapter in her book but her book was nowhere to be found, she looked everywhere but it was gone. It was as if the books purpose was to give her hope in life that life is worth living despite the hardships we face.

Blood Money
Exzentrius Mead was a man who intentionally avoided giving to others. His good fortune had never stirred his curiosity for goodwill. To him, poor circumstances simply related weakness, and deserved neither empathy nor vindication. Maggie had discerned all this of her father from their first and only encounter. She was sixteen then, and despite the tremor in her mother’s voice-when she spoke of him-and the cryptic warnings to keep away from the man, Maggie’s fears and lessons on discretion had been eclipsed by desperation, the desperation of an illegitimate, girl trying to save her sick mother. Now, twenty years later, the same man who had berated and threatened her during that encounter, was now begging her not to hang up.

Ask then Answer
Leaves crunched under her feet as she passed tents and makeshift cabins set among the trees. Visitors wandered the grounds of the forbidden sideshow. She pushed her way through the crowd, her shoulders brushed those she passed. The scents of burning sage fell over her, she was close. She plucked at the hair band around her wrist as she weaved around mingling bodies; her heart pounded and she remembered what Madame Vadoma promised she could provide.

The loud floors
It was a long and quiet car ride up to their new vacation cabin. There was a riff that had came between Dan and Whitney the past couple of months. Whitney had found some messages Dan had been sending messages to a girl online and he promised her it was just friendly but she knew better. They bought this place together to give them something to get out of the house and do together since the virus had shut everything down. Dan was excited about the hunting and fishing he was going to get to do this week and Whitney was excited about all the redecorating she was going to be able to do while he was in the woods. “I think this is it” Whitney said, as she turned down the radio. They headed down the long winding driveway Dan put his hand on Whitney’s and gave her a big Cheshire Cat grin and they pulled up to the small beautiful log home. Dan opened the door and reached into cooler sitting in the back seat and pulled out an ice cold Coors. He popped the top and said “alright babe vacation has officially started!” She smiled and laughed but in the back of her mind she knew how mean he got when he drank too many. They carried their luggage up the steps opened the door and walked into the cabin. It looked just like the pictures on line. The elderly lady they purchased it from said it belonged to her son but he had gotten into some trouble and sold it to her before he was sent away to prison. Whitney’s eyes immediently went to the hideous faded lime green shag carpet that covered the entire house. Pointing at it and looking at Dan she said “this is the first thing that’s has to go”. Dan just shook his head knowing how much that was about to cost him. They got all their luggage in and unpacked their clothes and began to it the cold stuff in the fridge. “I’ll take those” Dan said as Whitney started to put or of his Six packs into the fridge. “Please don’t get too drunk tonight” she said as she handed him the beer. “This is my last week of god damn vacation I get to take this year and I’m going to enjoy it!” He snapped back. She felt the cold air blow in the back door as he opened it and stepped out on the back porch. He turned on some classic country music and sat back in a patio chair. She just shook her head and grabbed the keys and headed out the door to make a Home Depot run. She looked around the store for a bit buying up a few things she loved and wanted to put in the new cabin. She finally walked over to the flooring section and found some snap in hardwood flooring that she adored and asked the associate if he could have it shipped up to their cabin. He said “of course we can have it there tomorrow” and went to check her out. She noticed a concerned look in his eyes when she told him the address to her cabin. “The Martin cabin?” He asked. “Yeah that was her last name” Whitney said with an uneasy chuckle. “No ma’am I mean William Martin. He was the man who used to live there but I haven’t seen him in a while” Oh said Whitney that must be the sons name. We bought it from his mother”. Rumor has it that he stole a bunch of money from some guys, then killed them and he’s spending the rest of his life in prison” the associate said. Whitney’s mouth dropped open and no words could come out. Did we really just buy a murders house? She thought to her self. The guy told her that her flooring would be dropped off tomorrow and to have a good night. “Fat chance of that now” she half jokingly said to him. She drove home with every word that man had said replaying in her mind. Wondering if it was true or just some small town gossip. She pulled up the drive way and seen every light in the house on and Dan standing on the porch beer in hand. “Where the fuck have you been I called you like 18 times?!” He screamed at her as she was getting out of the car. “ I just went to Home Depot to get some stuff to redo the house this week and my phone was on charge in the car. she replied sweetly to him. “ uh huh I bet you were at fucking Home Depot. Go figure how much of my fucking money did you spend?” “It was only like thirty five hundred dollars I got some pretty good deals on stuff” Dan stared at her with contempt as she walked past him into the house “thirty five hundred dollars!” He screamed “thirty five hundred fucking dollars!” Do you have any idea how hard I had to work to make that! A tear ran down her left cheek as she sat there listening to him rant. Dan finally calms down after ten straight minutes of screaming and sees how distraught Whitney is. He sits down beside her and brushes the hair from her wet face “I’m sorry” he said softly “you know I love you that’s why I get so mad sometimes. I’m sure the cabin will look great with the floors.” “Really?” Whitney squeeked “yeah babe” He said with a playful smerk. He looked her body up and down like she was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. “You know we haven’t broken the house in properly yet” he said with a playful tone she smiles and gives him a quick peck on the lips. He looks her straight in the eyes biting his lip as he pulls her back in. “Will you help me pull this carpet up tomorrow when you get back from fishing?” She asked him softly. “Of course babe” he said kicking his boots off. He takes his pants off slow looking at her puffy red face. “ I love you so much” he said to her as he starts taking her pants and panties off. Whitney leans back a little and let’s him pull them off, she loves him and she wants to believe that he loves her back and that he will get better. He kisses her inner thighs making his way up to her vagina. She relaxes and begins to enjoy her self. Thirty seconds goes by and he grabs her by the hips and bends her over the armrest of the couch and aggressively pushes himself into her. Whitney is in heaven for a moment. But only a moment. She feels Dan pull out thinking he’s finished already “that quick?” She asked jokingly. “No baby we’re just getting started” he replied “you wanna spend all my money without asking me... was the last words she heard as her body tensed up in pain as he rammed himself into her anus. She tried to scream but nothing came out. She tied to move but her legs didn’t work she just felt the pressure behind her hitting harder and harder till he grabbed her waist, pulled her hair and finished. “That’s what you get” he said smacking her on the ass. Whitney just laid there with tears running down her face till she heard him thud into the bed. Every step to the bathroom felt like a knife going into her. She finally made it to the toilet and sat there sobbing for an hour wiping the blood away before she could finally make her way to the bedroom. Never again she thought to herself as she closed her eyes.
