Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
Fool's Gold: Michael: Determined
Michael found more cash, watches, and rings as he pilfered through the dregs. He had found a purse and used it to carry his items. He hoped one of the many sets of keys he found was for a vehicle by the fence; he didn’t think he could walk too far, his head was pounding and he felt sick from leaning to check dregs.

As Calais Sleeps
It was dingier than most. A bulb had extinguished in one of the fridges and another blinked intermittently. The house lights were half asleep, bathing the garage in artificial twilight. Dominic barely felt the change in atmosphere emerging through the automatic doors from the midnight chill.

The Curse of Timber Den
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. A candle that marked the passing of yet more young souls consumed by a curse in the quaint New England town of Timber Den. A curse spat by a witch as she swung from the rafters of that cabin thousands of campfires before.

Snuff the Flame
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The fierce glow of the light through the now cracked window was obscured by a tangle of web and dust, though from miles down the hill at this late hour, it caught the attention of an old man walking his dog down old country roads. He had taken this path many times before and neglected to give the old cabin more than a moments notice, perhaps due to a youth spent hearing tall tales of the rickety old shack.

Ragdoll
Death is a scary thing to experience. You never know if there’s an afterlife or if there’s just nothing. I was just thirteen when I died. I got leukemia and was stuck in the hospital for weeks at the end of it all. My grandmother knitted me a doll. A rag doll. It was my favorite doll in the world. I named it Celeste and told my family that I’ll try my hardest to get better. My mother made a badge with the name Celeste on it, and my grandmother sewed it onto my rag doll. I was so grateful. I promised I’ll never lose this doll ever.

My Name Was Danny
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. What? Again? His concentration broken, the poet Carlyl opened his eyes. Reaching up, he rubbed his temples and then ran both hands through his salt and pepper hair. This was the third time in a row that the candle had ruined his simple mental exercise. He blew out a long rush of air.

Bringing the Light. Runner-Up in Campfire Ghost Story Challenge. Top Story - August 2023.
Advisory: swearing The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It flickered with the movement of the presence inside, as it moved past it. The silence around the cabin was absolute. If you listened hard, you would be able to hear the wax spitting and crackling in the flame. The creatures of the forest had frozen, permitting no noise to break the calm. No calls, no crack of twigs, no squeal of prey consumed. Their instinct told them to draw no attention to themselves in that moment, to keep to the shadows where the flame did not reach.

The Cabin
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Beth shook out the match that she had used to light the candle. She was there with three friends: Shane, Tom and Lindsey. The cabin was small, about ten feet by twelve, the wooden floorboards and roof was warped by water and time, the boards creaked loudly with every step. It seemed like the cabin would collapse in on itself any minutes. It smelt musky and damp, and the cabin was filled with large cobwebs that took over ten minutes to clear them away. By the time they had made it to the cabin it was almost night time. This hardly made a difference as the cabin was situated in a dense forest with a thick canopy overhead which hid most of the sun from it.

The Lure
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. I stopped and stared at the glow on the glass. What was I seeing? I had hiked passed this cabin for years, but most of the time in the daylight, but tonight I was a bit late as I headed back to the trail and it was dark. The candle burned in the window. Was somebody living there?
